Don't forget: Giving a musician $10 is worth as much as streaming their song 1,000 times on Apple Music and 2,500 times on Spotify.

@stevestreza smh why didn’t I get a notification for this tag, anyway you’re cute 💖
@stevestreza yeah – I buy my favorite bands' albums just to support them, then I continue to stream their music in good conscience.
@nhoj @stevestreza damn right! I do the same using hdtracks.com
@nhoj @stevestreza one reason in prefer self-hosted stuff like Plex or Jellyfin or even #funkwhale is I can buy from bandcamp and stream
@nhoj @stevestreza

Every time you use one of those streaming services, you financially support regressive policies that weaken both artists and listeners
@stevestreza @cjrando I much prefer having an on-disk library for music (offline listening at no extra charge, no bandwidth consumption), and Bandcamp is very convenient for adding songs directly, and it even compensates artists better
@aismallard @stevestreza @cjrando Plus you also get to stream it all from the mobile app and website. Bandcamp rules!
@stevestreza there's a tool to search your Spotify playlist that will take you to the Bandcamp page for the artist, I've used it before and it's super handy versus manually searching it https://hypem.com/merch-table

Hype Machine

@stevestreza I had no idea there was that much difference between fees across the two platforms. Outrageous.

ADHD makes me a good fan because I buy the physical product to gather dust on a shelf and then listen to it on Apple Music on repeat for months solid.

@philsherry @stevestreza These are average comp numbers, which includes Spotify's free listening tier. If you pay for Spotify Premium they're a lot closer (though Spotify still lags slightly)
@stevestreza Streaming a musician only really helps WRT ranking algorithms and how they might capture new audiences. If you want to help them in a direct and financial fashion, go to their concerts and even buy merch/CD's. Buy their albums on Bandcamp. A few times I've kicked in bucks for a Kickstarter to help an album afford recording and mastering.
@stevestreza @muchanchoasado what about buying a CD today?
@samuelprudencio @stevestreza @muchanchoasado Artists get a lot more from a Bandcamp purchase than they get from a CD purchase. For a CD, it's about $1.50. For a Bandcamp download, it's 80%+.

@stevestreza yea incidentally this is why I don't put my music on streaming sites. It takes away your power as a listener and mine as an artist by making the value be in the service not the music.

Incidentally no one ever buys my music on bandcamp either :(

@stevestreza I kinda like using Bandcamp
@stevestreza "Only" bought 3 things during the last month - because I already own most of the stuff I like :)
@stevestreza I stream music. But once a month I track down the socials of one that I've really over played that month and tip at least a hundred dollars. I've been doing that for at least the last five years. I'm not suggesting that's the right number, just it ought to be some number.
@stevestreza I really hope bandcamp don't screw artists out of purchases, as that's where I prefer to throw my $ towards artists.
@stevestreza
How the fuck do they survive?
Entire Bandcamp union team laid off in cuts to beloved Oakland firm

Bandcamp United's entire bargaining team was laid off in the massive cuts to the Oakland firm, the union said, as well as half of the Daily team.

@stevestreza whenever possible I subscribe to musicians I like on Patreon
@stevestreza
Yeez. Or 5000 times on YouTube music, apparently.
Plus, streaming has a higher carbon footprint than local playback. https://producerhive.com/music-marketing-tips/streaming-royalties-breakdown/

The greatest musicians in the world are rarely in it for the money. However, tour vans, broken guitar strings, and studio time do not come free, so it

@stevestreza i have literally just mailed a check to artists whose music I have downloaded. I never use apple or spotify or any pay service. I strip all ads from youtube and thank the artists personally.
@stevestreza So can I just give them the money instead?
@stevestreza This is one more reason why I buy vinyl, go to concerts and buy merch.
@stevestreza OK, how about Tidal? (Not sure where they are on the spectrum)

@stevestreza that $10 probably gets you the whole album, versus just one song, so the comparison isn't quite right. Is it feasible you'd listen to a good album over 100 times in your lifetime? I'd say yes, but it would take some time.

Having said that, buying also has other benefits: a label can't just pull the plug and have the album disappear from your library. I listen to a lot of music which is not on Spotify...

@stevestreza @CaptainJanegay that’s why I purchase music only, no streaming subscription 😎
@stevestreza And bandcamp.com makes this very easy to do if the musician in question is set up there !
@stevestreza I haven't recently learned how important giving $1, $2, or $10 can make a bigger difference for musicians. I'm buying music again.
@stevestreza Introducing them to #Wavlake and/or @StevenB’s The Split Kit and Music Side Project can quickly bring in more money that Apple Music of Spotify thanks to the #value4value model.

@stevestreza @Weru

Too true! And for $10 most musicians give you 10 songs to download. (My album is an AU buck, about US75c)

@stevestreza @WillRobinson buying their music on Bandcamp.com is so much better.
@stevestreza This is why I buy music on Bandcamp.
@stevestreza I think the number's lower on Tidal but it's still there. A nice side gig for someone who makes music.
@stevestreza Buy merch! Buy their stuff on bandcamp.com! Buy their music on physical media (if you must ^__^)!
@stevestreza Streaming platforms have been doing wonders for me in 2023. Fortunately, I do have a few people who enjoy my work enough to support me on Bandcamp where I can at least get a reasonable payout.

@stevestreza And that is one of the great many reasons I still use CDs.

Also, I was born in the mid-2000s.

@stevestreza
Tidal is marginally better, this is why I use it when I stream. Most of the time, mp3 downloaded from bandcamp 👍
@stevestreza But all the valuable exposure! Simply lost in the rain!
@stevestreza @distractal
.. or buying at least 10 of their CDs (if they're at a regular record label and not so big that they get special conditions)
