Kinda baffled by the "we need a female Indiana Jones" discourse rn.

I mean.... Lara Croft *exists*.

@charliejane The movies definitely have issues, but they also have Alicia Vikander.
@charliejane if/when the Phoebe W-B Amazon series debuts, this problem will either be solved or exacerbated

@charliejane This is an interesting topic because I didn't watch the most recent movie, but "rich person who raids tombs for her personal gain," is a bit different than, "stop rich people from exploiting history."

Is there something I don't know about Laura Croft that makes her a more sympathetic protagonist?

@geekyonion @charliejane

Except Croft didn't do it for personal gain. She, like Jones, was attempting to stop the baddies from destroying the world (unlike Jones, her baddies varied). There's no denying she was rich (born into the aristocracy), especially compared to a University professor's salary, but her wealth had nothing to do with her archeology - which (in some timelines) was the reason her family disowned her.

@deirdrebeth @charliejane I'm glad I asked! Thanks for helping clarify!

@pete @charliejane
Yes!
I'd almost forgotten that movie. I thought it was pretty good and would have liked to see an adaptation of some of the other volumes.
@pete @charliejane wait, there's a movie? If I ever knew I definitely forgot about it. I've read some of the comics ages ago. Limited to what was translated to Dutch and available in the library
@charliejane you mean an Indiana Jones type role written for a woman Harrison Fords age? I’m here for that.

@charliejane I am absolutely 100% on board with swapping race or genders when it comes to titles. Black Captain America? Bad. Ass. Jane as Thor? Kick ass. All-female Ghostbusters? Absolutely. (Wasn’t as good as the originals—don’t kill me!)

But Harrison Ford played a PERSON. His NAME was Indiana Jones. Ford didn’t try to co-opt anything, did he? Just leave him be. Fuck, not absolutely every single piece of popular media with a white cis male protagonist needs to get this treatment.

@semioticstandard @charliejane

Ok, but being that "Indiana" was the dog - there no requirement that the human who adopted that name be a boy.

@charliejane that live action Dora the Explorer movie filled the Indy void imo and absolutely should have become a weird, wild franchise of its own
@dunny0 I need to watch that!!!
@charliejane I also recommend the novelization
It’s unhinged in the best way
@charliejane
That's literally what I thought when I first saw that. But I've seen nothing of the franchise but artwork/movie posters.
@charliejane And Sydney Fox. But non-Canadians probably haven't heard of her.
@bcholmes @charliejane Well, she did retire after her final relic hunt.
@Caution @charliejane The Beachcombers theme song lives rent-free in my head for all eternity.
@bcholmes @charliejane Not gonna lie, when I first arrived in Gibson’s I was trying really hard not to hum it loud enough to expose myself as such an utter tourist.
See the Beachcombers as animated characters in new series

The Beachcombers ran on CBC for 19 seasons. Now Blair Peters and Josh Mepham are working to bring it back as an animated series.

CBC
@charliejane maybe this should get the Hollywood treatment?

@charliejane Also Melody Pond/River Song and Bernice Summerfield exist
@charliejane Also, Carmen Sandiego. In some incarnations she's a thief of antiquities, and in some she's a repatriator of them.
