Lead dev for Threads makes me cautiously optimistic.
@EposVox As long as that support for ActivityPub eventually comes.
@EposVox hey if I can follow and talk with people on there with my current Mastodon, I'm all for it

@EposVox this would be awesome if they do support it.

Still waiting on Tumblr to implement it too. I want to covert my friends dang it!

@EposVox That is really interesting to see.
@EposVox Alright. So scratch off "embrace, extend, and extinguish" and replace with "Eternal September", then? :P
@kmeisthax I don’t know what either of those mean so probably not

@EposVox "Embrace, extend, and extinguish" is what everyone was thinking Threads would do to the Fediverse. That is, they'd make a better version of Mastodon, everyone would migrate to it, and then they'd close and lock the doors (again). Facebook did this to blogs in the past.

"Eternal September" is what happened when AOL federated with USENET back in the 80s. The platform was utterly flooded with new users who had no clue about USENET social norms, which were subsequently lost.

@kmeisthax people clinging to social norms on a platform when new users arrive never works. The number of “this is how we do things here!!!!!” Line-in-the-sand-drawing I’ve seen with every new wave cracks me up. People are going to behave the way they want. Platform doesn’t dictate that.
@EposVox @tchambers Yeah, the “like” button creator was totally aware of what his invention would become and isn't trying to fix his mess now.
@EposVox The suggestion that the user base is one that worries about being "de-platformed", though...
@kaliranya well that statement was in application to Threads users, and came AFTER saying you may want to leave. Nonissue
@EposVox You heard some generic PR babble and feel optimistic? How naive..

@maxine cautiously optimistic that the dev wants the ability to leave and take your data with you? Yes.

Being cynical helps no one here.

@EposVox I'm not trying to help you, or meta.. so yes.

@EposVox It’ll be interesting to see what happens. The fact that they’ve mentioned “you may one day end up leaving Threads” is highly unusual for someone to post when working on something that they want people to use. Lots of good sentiments here! Thank you for sharing this.

My Opinion Follows

It is a bit sad that so many instances have opted for defederating before Threads was even able to federate in the first place. I see mention about “spying” and “nothing will be private”, but you know? That’s the risk we all take when we do anything on the internet.

To be honest, I’m excited for the influx of users this should bring to the Fediverse. They may be on a questionable platform, but they will now have an option that they never had before. The option to leave and bring their community with them. The more instances that defederate with Threads, the harder it will be for people to leave Threads.

@frostyfrog I very much agree with this. The amount of jumps I’ve seen to defederate in general on here is very depressing and kinda ruins a lot of the potential.
@frostyfrog @EposVox I think people have been bitten by Meta so many times now that they are SOOOOOO wary....
@EposVox oh damn I thought activitypub was day 1, oh well. hopefully it doesn't get forgotten (like Tumblr, as far as I know)
@matt freaking tumblr :’(
