ROFL 🤣

Threads isn’t GDPR compliant

No launch Thursday in the EU it seems… (according to the Irish Independent anyway)

https://m.independent.ie/business/technology/no-instagram-threads-app-in-the-eu-irish-dpc-says-metas-new-twitter-rival-wont-be-launched-here/a1927220337.html

No Instagram Threads app in the EU: Irish DPC says Meta's new Twitter rival won't be launched here

Meta will not launch its new Twitter rival, Threads, in Ireland or the EU for the foreseeable future.

Independent.ie
@jon guessing a side effect in tryign to pre-prime it with Instagram users?
@TomatoSoup Yep. Facebook - Insta sharing wasn’t GDPR compatible.
@jon the article doesn't claim anywhere that Threads is or isn't GDPR compliant. Please do not spread misinformation :-(
@delroth It's written right there: Facebook/Instagram plans to "mingle the two data streams in the US" but can't in EU; "the tech giant has not yet prepared the service for a European launch", which means it has not written a privacy policy for the EU, and it can't be GDPR compliant until it has one.

@nemobis "has not yet prepared the service for a European launch" can mean anything and GDPR is far from the only reason why you might not launch in every single locale at once. There's literally nothing in "not yet prepared the service" that implies privacy in any way, that's a wild guess on your part.

Like, just from the top of my head: could be DSA compliance, could be NetzDG compliance for the biggest EU country, could be lack of moderation resources in $lang, etc.

@delroth So you think privacy policies write themselves?

@nemobis how the fuck is that what you read from my post?

Blocked.

@jon

I guess it won't be in the UK either.

@simon_lucy it’s allowed in UK. But how that works with GDPR equivalence? No idea.

@jon

Currently we aren't any different, the UK Govt may want to change it but they're out of time on this session.

Meta may be more afraid of some of the regulators in the EU I suppose.

@jon Also that line at the bottom saying that Tweetdeck is going behind the blue tick paywall in a month...
@jon well, that's off to a good start in Europe.....
@jon I think the young people call this a "big L for meta"
@jon Who'd have expected a Zuckerborg service to not be GDPR compliant?
@jon
But I guess data from Europe will still flow through the Fediverse to US Meta
@notsoloud yes. But the bit that’ll not be GDPR complaint will be the Insta-Threads data share.
@jon zu früh geblockt😂
@jon Ceterum censeo librem faeces esse delendam.
@jon Isn't the UK legislation still the same as the EU on these matters?
