This #FourthofJuly weekend, stop using #nationalism and #patriotism as synonyms.

🇺🇸Patriotism encompasses devotion to the country as a whole – including all the people who live within it.

🇺🇸Nationalism refers to devotion to only one group or people over others.

@TheConversationUS @BostonAbrams No one has ever used patriotism and nationalism interchangeably.

Oh man, live a couple months in the south and you'll have incredibly stark examples, possibly on the daily depending with whom and where you frequent.

To clarify, I meant you'll encounter dozens of nationalists under the guise of patriotism. I think it's rather incontrovertible that a large, very vocal segment of the US population equates patriotism with deglobalization, and a step further, nationalism.

At least in the Texas woodlands.

@BostonAbrams @majere @TheConversationUS But Trump actually meant that he’s a nationalist — a white nationalist.

Somehow I think this lesson would be banned in Florida, Texas, and Idaho.
@TheConversationUS It is so easily subverted, though, isn’t it? As in HUAC.
@TheConversationUS totally support the message, but why is Superman cradling that boy's face?
@TheConversationUS "The Good Old Days." When the message to school kids was not to discriminate. Now we're banning books written from a differing viewpoint.

@TheConversationUS

Superman is wrong though. America's entire history has been treating people like shit.

@TheConversationUS

I think this sort of wholesome propaganda was kind of a good idea.

@TheConversationUS unfortunately all the kids in the picture are white.
@StephenK I think the guy at the back on the left is a person of color, and perhaps the guy Superman has his hand on
