Hmmm I'm noticing that I'm not seeing replies to my toots from mastodon.social, but I can see the replies to THOSE, so then I can click on the person, go to their replies tab, and THEN see the replies.

Why is that? Is my instance limiting mastodon.social traffic? Did the replier set their replies to "Unlisted" privacy?

What happen?

@jillithd Yeah, tech.lgbt has mastodon.social limited for... well, a litany of reasons. You can fix it on a per-user basis by following each user from there whose posts you want to view.
@jillithd it's just lagging behind.
Mastodon.social never works well, when there is a migration wave.
@jillithd i started the process to move to a new instance but never actually finished it. Reading threads about this very topic is, frankly, exhausting as someone who doesn't use social media much anymore and just wants a place to chit chat with my people. A whole lot of attitude and derision towards users who are figuring it all out.

@schnee well, I follow you, so I get to see your stuff even if your instance is limited-view otherwise. :D

Download the list of accounts you follow, along with any hashtags you follow (not sure if that is downloadable) BEFORE you forward your old account to the new one, because I don't think you can view the list AFTER.

1. Make a new account on another instance.
2. Download list of follows from old account (via web, go to Settings, then click the hamburger menu, Import and export)
3. Write down any important hashtags you follow
4. In that same Settings hamburger menu, pick "Account" and scroll to the bottom, following the links (see image).
5. Import your follow list into your new account.

Your posts on your old account will not migrate, but you can set it so your followers get forwarded to your new account.

@schnee the most jarring for me was that my previous posts don't migrate, because that data just exists on that server. Unless the instance goes away (RIP mastodon.lol), the posts still exist, just where they were originally created. It feels weird to not bring the history with you, but you can create a new history on your new account.
