We were independent for about a week once (see Grito de Lares) when our people rose against a tyrannical Spaniard government. The movement gave more political power to (actual) Puerto Ricans, but this all went backwards once the US occupation of PR began.
Fun fact: We were only given citizenship by the US 100 years AFTER they "took us in" and it came at the time of WW1, we were LITERALLY given citizenship so that we could get drafted for the war.
