I've only recently got myself a proper macro lens and it's been a real treat for me. I have to slow down a lot though, you can't rush this stuff. Which is good. Go slow. Goley goley.

Steven Lawson Photography@ewen Macro is addictive - if a little challenging - isn't it? I have a 60mm 1:1 macro but it's just too wide, meaning I have to get silly close to subjects, so instead I use two extenders on my 70-300mm zoom which gives me around 1:2 ratio and lots more reach to keep further back from subjects. I've become adept at holding my breath for ages without passing out, as the DoF is punishingly shallow!
My lung capacity is being transformed by the day; I'll be able to free-dive for abalone after another week of this!
I really feel like I just landed in the goldilocks zone with this 105mm macro. Long enough to sneak up on lizards, compact enough to pack in the sling.
But still I'm looking for art, not just the subject. Sticking to F2.8 will help me on that. I love bokeh.
@ewen Yeah, me too, I used a 90mm f2.8 back in my DSLR days and got some really lovely bokeh with that. A ring flash can be useful in low light situations, reducing camera shake too, but it does flatten the light a bit too much
Goldilocks here again – turns out the stabilisation on this new camera is off the dial and I didn't realise the impact that makes until I accidentally turned it off last week! Yikes.
Maybe one day I'll look into flash, but my heart belongs to natural light. I love it when a composition presents itself that I had never imagined. Just the way the light pokes through somewhere.
