Tip for newcomers:

While giving a ★ to posts you enjoy on Mastodon is nice, it does not help to boost the post in any way. It only shows the creator that you enjoyed their post.

It helps a post on here much more to engage with it by "boosting" which reposts it to your followers, or replying to it!

@Akiko That's one thing I believe should change, but feels like changing it could have a negative impact

Starring a post should help boost the post, but if it did this, it'd mean it'd need some sort of algorithm underlying to show more starred posts in priority, that could end up causing more harm than good

@akatsukilevi I think how it works is fine, but I wish it were more apparent to new users that it works this way.
@Akiko Yeah, some sort of popup to explain about it would be nice tbh
@Akiko turns out, Twitter shows “favourites” from followed accounts on the timeline for a reason 😁
@Akiko Maybe it’s just me but I use “star” to show that I like a post and “boost” to share something with other people. These are two distinct actions for me. I’m also a bit hesitant about flooding the timelines of the (few) people who follow me with with boosted posts, so I use boost a bit conservatively.
@ayushnix It's not just you, that's what I was trying to explain is the function :)
@Akiko uh, i didn't know this one
@lirel Never too late to learn and adapt! We only see things that are reposted or commented on by others we follow in our timeline (and even those can be toggled). :)
@Akiko Good tip! I’ll give you a star😉
