What can you do for the fediverse? Make it a lively place people want to come back to!

- Welcome new people.
- Make connections.
- Post photos of the things happening in your life.
- Post videos of what you see.
- Share your thoughts and opinions in original posts.
- Participate in conversations.
- Think twice before replying.
- Boost good toots!
- Invite friends, family, colleagues and neighbours and help them get started.
- Give concrete, helpful advice.

Most of all: be here, not there.

@evan I really feel like the fediverse in its current state could really do with utilising FOAF if it's still a thing. (Or similar)

There are so many manual or scraped lists and directories knocking around at the moment to attempt to aid network discovery.

Could be a really amazing tool I think.

@evan i don't know, in my experience & observation using the fediverse feels a lot like shouting from a soapbox perhaps even more so than mainstream social media, and most people on it generally go ignored. As such i don't think this is going to encourage people to stay, if anything it might exacerbate the feeling of "no one's here".
@evan I’m no longer allowed to be anywhere else. Lots of literary analysis of statements and sentiments. I’ve found a home here with my street photography that’s what matters most.
@evan Wise advice, every point.
@evan why do I have to think twice before replying 😬

@BeanieMacIntosh Hi Beanie!

Good replies are nice. Bad replies can range from irritating to terrifying.

Some things to think about before replying:

- How well do I know the original poster?

- Is this something I could look up myself?

- Has anyone else already said this?

- Am I shifting focus to myself?

- Will this reply make the poster's day better?

- Is it kind? Is it true? Is it necessary?

- Did I really read and understand the original post?

- Should I mute or block instead?

@evan It's a scary new era of the internet but we can navigate it together

@evan

Alright, that's what I can do.

What can the fediverse do?

- Make proper lists available, where you don't have to follow someone to add them.

- Improve the search function.

The fediverse isn't just the software; it's also the people and the community.

@evan

Yes, I am aware. Which is why I am floating ideas for improvement.

@ecpoir
My account is on a Frendica instance and I have those things. Search works pretty well here. Lists are a little more awkward, I can't add people without them ending up in my main "all" feed, but with a bit of work categorizing everyone I follow into different lists I can view subsets of who I follow easily. (I could, for example, set up a "news" list and an "everyone else" list and switch between them with a button press.) Other parts of the Fediverse probably handle it more seamlessly though, Frendica is kind of old and clunky by Fediverse standards.

@mnemonicoverload @evan

Thanks, this sounds great.

So now the question is do I migrate (again) or do I cross my fingers that our local admin can copy those features onto this instance.

@evan @ecpoir That's always the question. I'm probably not the best person to ask as I'm still relatively new here on the Fediverse as a migrant from Twitter last autumn. I do wish there were better guides to compare all the different types of Fediverse instances and what their comparative features are to make it easier to find the best fit. That's something that seems to be lacking to me.
@evan @benjaminhollon where else would one be but here? “There” is way to invasive for the likes of me.
