Actually, goggles are a great idea in space.

* prevent metal shards from getting into your eyes in free fall
* protect eyes from flash of nuclear explosion
* prevent blindness from exposure to energy beams. Like the one the Star Trek crew is going to use to try and blast open the Talosian door.
