Where to now? (plus a minor rant about Discord)

David Pierce: So Where Are We All Supposed to Go Now? Long-term, I’m bullish on “fediverse” apps like Mastodon and Bluesky, because I absolutely believe in the possibility of the social web, a decentralized universe powered by ActivityPub and other open protocols that bring us together without forcing us

@matt thrilled that someone feels the same about Discord. Great for small groups, as you’ve noted, and truly awful for anything community-sized.
@matt I guess we need to wait…
@matt I mean Discord isn’t really a replacement for Twitter, though, it’s more of a series of breakout rooms; I’ve had really good experiences in the smaller to medium groups I’m in, but the larger ones are basically like huge Twitch chats, which is to say they’re not worth the time for most people

@wickedgood Agreed, David suggested it as a potential place for Reddit communities to go, not a Twitter thing. 100% with you it’s not a feed like Twitter/Masto.

People seem to dig them so I’m willing to admit there’s *something* there, but it’s always been a pain for me 😔

@matt It’s basically Slack for personal use. When you use it that way, it’s got a lot of the same use cases and pitfalls.
@matt I don’t even bother checking Discord anymore. It’s a nightmare experience and only makes sense if you truly live on it which I don’t have the time for.
@matt yea I don’t think Discord is the destination for Reddit communities either. I may try out Lemmy I think as that seems to be the most 1:1 replacement that I’ve found
@mattjopete Lemmy and kbin seem like the right alts, but man, they're ghost towns right now it seems 😔
@matt That’s disappointing, I’ve definitely been feeling the loss of Reddit as it, through Apollo was my primary social media.

@matt your description of both why Reddit communities work well and how bad these work in Discord is 1000% spot on!

Let’s hope we get something good going with the Reddit alternatives 😕
