cyberplace.social/explore - fun instance ran by Kevin Beaumont. My personal account is on it.

infosec.exchange - lots of cybersecurity-folks, but open to tech and things outside of infosec.

@mastodonmigration I run https://montereybay.social/explore, an instance for folks who live near the Monterey Bay in California (or just love the area like we do). I’d encourage everyone to check out the geographical based instance like ours, https://sfba.social, https://ottawa.place, and more. The Local feed on these instances is really local, and you get the benefits of Nextdoor without, you know, all that other stuff. https://masto.town is a great place to find a server near you.

@paul @mastodonmigration Been trying to find this out. I'm on social.vivaldi.net; is there any idiot-proof way of following feeds from a different server on my home tab?
@cydonian Yes, it's fairly straightforward when you're using a web browser. Let's say you find someone on another instance that you want to follow. Click on that person's name to go to their account page and copy the URL in the address bar. It will look something like https://montereybay.social/@paul. Open a new browser window and go to your home instance. Paste the link in the Search box and hit Return. You should see the "remote" account with a button that will let you follow them.

@paul That's for individual people, yes. I meant for the feed from an entire server. The value is to follow chatter in a specific sub-network. Following every single individual in the sub-network separately is simply not feasible.
@cydonian Ah, I understand now. Looks like that isn't supported by the web client, but a couple of mobile apps have that feature: https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-browse-the-local-timelines-of-other-servers-on-mastodon-can-i-follow-other-servers-local-timelines-from-my-account/

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@paul I know Toot has this feature where you can “shift” focuses to another server, but it’s still like switching social networks. Besides it gets tiresome when you have multiple servers you want to follow, especially if there isn’t much activity in many (which is what you’d expect in a smaller community)

It would be very useful if there’s a way to combine “local” (aka “small server” feeds) and “global” feeds into one single feed. That’s how Reddit does it, eg.

@cydonian This article in PC Magazine has more details and screenshots: https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-follow-people-on-mastodon. The copy/paste method also works for accounts on other types of Fediverse servers, like Lemmy/knet (discussion groups), Pixelfed (images), and Peertube (video).

@mastodonmigration It's not a specific instance, but here's a post I originally did last fall (and recently updated) about how to find the right instance, which has discussions of some of the key concerns as well as a bunch o' resources.
