Nothing on the internet will ever compare to the joy of using Napster for the first time.
@protolalia what about using Irc for the first time? ( I know, it was not much used in the USA, or in eastern Europe)
@darshan I never used irc. The first time I had internet at home was through AOL. I still feel nostalgic hearing the AOL dial-up noise. : )

@protolalia I remember it too. The sound of a dialing 56k modem.

I believe it sounds a little different in Italy since the phone system was weird https://youtu.be/nEh43_10Ct4

I had internet around 1995, but it was damn expensive and it kept the phone line busy ( and parents didn't like it at all )

@darshan It's the same sound! I was 19 and living on my own in 1995, but my little brother drove our parents crazy being constantly online.

@darshan @protolalia

I can still hear the little voice saying "I seek you" (ICQ) <3

@protolalia do you think today's kids have their own Napster moment?
@signaleleven
I wonder what it would be. I used to spend hours every week reading music reviews and scouring used CD bins because music was so expensive. I worked at Tower Records for minimum wage bc I figured the store discount was worth it. Then, suddenly, it was all free. It felt pretty amazing.
@protolalia I only loaded Metallica tracks.
@protolalia remembering my queue full of squirrel nut zippers and cherry poppin daddies…. ahhh
@protolalia
I had quite the collection of Sesame Street and Brak. Good times 💯
