I believe we are about to see a radical shift in how we use the internet, we just don't know what will take form yet.

Most of us were on forums and IRCs 10-15 years ago. After that, most of us went to social media.

I think we are reaching the end of the social media era as we know it.

Right now, people are leaving places like Twitter and Reddit and moving to federated/decentralized social platforms.

What's to come after this?
Not sure. Only time will tell.

With the increasing doubt we have on centralized services, I believe we will see more advocate for decentralized/fediverse platforms.

Maybe the big companies (MAANG) of the world will try and get their hands all over it and centralize it again, maybe not. I would not like to see that become a reality, but it's one of the paths I see right now.

One thing I do predict is that we will begin to see more specialized sites for specific themes, sorta like forums in a way. For instance, a site for communities such as fandoms.

We sorta have this on Discord, but it's on a centralized server, so there needs to be a great deal of caution with how much data is trusted to be available when people need it the most. If Discord goes down, we'll lose a great deal of information, such as game wikis, developer documentation, etc.

@GeekBrony I.... feel like that's just reinventing the Web 2.0 internet circa 2004. Am I nuts or is that just what it is?
@GeekBrony It feels like it, but I'm not convinced the general public will learn the lessons from this that I hope they'd learn.. I guess we'll see
@malice
I hope so! But the general public has the memory of a fish with these sorts of things, so I doubt it.

@malice @GeekBrony agreed, seeing all the people clamor to get bluesky invites to jump off Twitter spells it out.
Yeah they want to get out from under the madman running the site, but they're jumping back into the exact same conditions that led to that madman beig in control in the first place. The cycle will repeat, and faster.

Hoping I'm just being pessimistic, we really need a renaissance, a return to form of the old web (communities, long lived message boards and forums etc) with modern identity, security, and tastes. And we need it widely used

@GeekBrony THIS. THIS. THIS.

With how poorly the major sites are being handled now, it was only a matter of time before we see the tides shift.

Only time will tell however if companies will sink or adapt with the changes, though I'd rather not see Facebook or Google try and get their slimy fingered hands on this kinda tech - I have heard it might be easy to block them out entirely but we'll see.

@GeekBrony would love to see a Fedi attempt at YouTube as well, but I have the feeling that is asking for too much as of now.
@Elliejojo I hear more about PeerTube as of late, which might be something to look into.
@GeekBrony @Elliejojo Yep, PeerTube is a thing. I have my own instance but I don't use it much.
@GeekBrony @Elliejojo Nobody really uses it as far as I'm aware. There's some youtubers pushing stuff like bitchute which is not decentralised afaik and I'm not sure how LBRY works

@diamond @Elliejojo @GeekBrony Bitchute is where insane people go. I'd be EXTREMELY suspicious of anyone advocating for using it.

Peertube used to kinda suck, haven't tried it recently, but I don't think there's a lot of interesting stuff on it even if the technical side gets sorted out.

A good alternative to youtube would be amazing, but probably not simple.

@malice I probably remember bitchute from some sus youtubers I used to watch
@malice @Elliejojo @GeekBrony activitypub is just inherently trash IMO
@diamond @Elliejojo @GeekBrony Don't really know much about activitypub itself, but even if it's trash, I guess it's what we have for now.
@malice bluesky's authenticated transfer (AT) protocol is pretty promising
@GeekBrony I could see something of a return to forums happening, but it won’t be seismic.
@GeekBrony The problem right now with the Fediverse is largely the lack of synchronization across instances. If an instance goes down, or a new instance pops up, there's a lot of problems evidenced by the "Information below may reflect the user's profile incompletely" and it really is an issue because if the Fediverse wants to survive, some more intricate synchronization needs to pop up, especially on the follows/followers tabs where you can't see whose following a person unless they're from the same instance that you use, and it's really problematic. Especially if the Fediverse does want chatrooms, as it's a bit hard to have conversations when half of a conversation just doesn't get synced onto your instance.
@GeekBrony it certainly seems we're at a crossroads, especially with the issues plaguing places like Twitter and Reddit
