Around 80% of long-standing #Mastodon users are currently explaining how to use Mastodon. So I'll join in by saying...

If you like a post then press the boost button. Liking a post is great and shows your appreciation but there's no other system functionality behind it. Boosting on the other hand, shares the post with a wider audience, which is the only way posts really get seen. Oh and use lots of hashtags as that's the best way to find specific content. #MastodonMigration #TwitterMigration

@druid BOOSTED! Have a good sunday!
@druid any tips as far as etiquette on the site for new users?

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@ollysint Yes, a really simple one:

Be nice.

You'll find that interactions on #Mastodon tend to be very different from what you might have experienced on Twitter. Generally, Mastodon users are intelligent, inquisitive, diverse, friendly and go out of their way to be helpful. There's no place for rudeness here. Having a caring attitude and being open to the wide variety of people's interests, without judgement, is very liberating for everyone.

@ollysint Here's another one... Follow people liberally, at least to start off with. You'll find that following a lot of people will populate your timeline with an interesting, diverse range posts, possibly on subjects you may not normally get to see. You can always slow down on the following later on or even unfollow any accounts that don't quite fit well with you. Don't worry about unfollowing someone or if someone unfollows you. People here won't take it personally.

@druid I couldn't resist to hit the Like-Star on your remark (which is spot on!).
I use the Like-Star only when I really "need" to. 😎
@druid is it true that Liking does nothing in the background to make the toot more likely to appear in someone's timeline or search?
@solarbabies That's absolutely true. There are no weird little secret algorithms running in the background on Mastodon. There are no mechanisms that make some posts more likely to be seen than others... apart from manually boosting. Boosting effectively copies that post onto your timeline for all of your followers to see at that point in time.
