Ok if anyone can explain the ending of Silo to me I’m all ears. The last bit of the last episode makes absolutely no sense. Why would they spend all the effort to show an Eden in the helmets of people who go outside? What purpose does that serve? They showed the real wasteland the whole time, so why bother with the Eden footage?

@wjs Also trying to figure it out.

The only reason I can come up with is that it’s to incentivize people to clean.

🤷🏻‍♂️

I really enjoyed the rest of the show and thought it was smartly written, so I'm assuming/hoping there's something I missed.

@jeff @wjs That was all I could come up with too, but I still can’t make sense of the logic.. Maybe since they don’t understand the concept of cameras let alone video… perhaps the idea is they think “cleaning” will reveal the “true” world to those in the silo?

I dunno

@jeff @wjs This is the reason, and it's said explicitly. "They have to see" is said right before cleaning. Everyone cleans because everyone thinks the ones inside can't see.

Probably doesn't help that by then people are already not thinking straight.

They normally don't know what a video is. The though doesn't cross their heads.

@jeff The books pull it off better, but yeah, basically what the other replies said – its to convince them that they’re being lied to and that they should clean the sensors so that everyone else can see what they’re seeing.
@wjs my take was that it was to make them feel happy before the poisonous outside air seeps through the shoddy tape. Side note: how do they match it up with the actual landscape?
@bi11jon @wjs
AppleTV -> Apple Vision :D
@wjs also noticed a bunch of other silos. Which I’m guessing is where our hero is going.
@wjs i truly hope we get a second season because what the actual fuck

@lia @wjs The show was approved with all the books already scheduled for future seasons. It's a long burn.

But they'd been telegraphing it since the beginning. We'd seen the green landscape already in the visor, we'd seen the big screen glitching and, most importantly, it's always the same flock of birds flying past each time.

@wjs Showing the cleaners an Eden landscape convinced them that they need to clean the sensor. That’s why “they always clean.”

Juliette figured out that it was the helmet that was a lie, and that’s why she didn’t clean.

@wjs I think so they feel compelled to clean the sensors to “show everyone how nice it is.” Otherwise they wouldn’t bother? But of course, some of them might wonder why they should clean the sensors if they think the images people see are fake. 🤷‍♂️
@jashapiro Most cleaners are not thinking straight by then. Suits are made faulty on purpose. People only think "it's beautiful, they need to see" (said out loud when holston went out to clean)
@wjs it tricks them into cleaning. Nobody plans to clean them they see the green healthy world and say I better clean so the can see the truth. Then they die. And the reasons for the cleaning etc past that get spoilery
@wjs It’s so they’ll do the cleaning, hoping to show everyone below that it’s beautiful up top. The cleaning is also a moment that unites the peoples of the silo, so hopefully they won’t revolt again too soon? Something like that.
@wjs it is a trick to make them remove their helmets and die. If it was showing the real landscape, they would never remove the helmet and find out there are other silos, etc
@wjs right? All of that technology being thrown away just to trick the doomed exiles into cleaning a lens?
@wjs The correct answer is given several times already in your replies, but I will say it for some reason it made a lot more sense in the books. Feels a stretch in the show. Still, “so they’ll clean” is the answer.
@wjs “they always say that, but they always clean.”
@wjs my explanation was that by showing them something beautiful, it would make them clean the lens so that others could see what’s out there.

@wjs The author did an AMA on Reddit on Sunday. Someone asked him the same question, so you can get the answer to your question direct from him, here:
