Lemmy.world grew by about 40% on the first day of reddit migration - Lemmy.world

Lemmy.world [https://lemmy.world/] grew from around 51000 total users the moment 3rd party reddit apps started to shut down on June 30 to 71000 total users at the time of this post (July 1). That’s a 40% growth in about 12 hours! Welcome newcomers!

We definitely felt the ship groaning through all this. Thankfully the Rudd-er skillfully navigated through this, and the software update on top.

Anyways, welcome to Lemmy 17!

As fellow former Resistors we should understand server issues
That’s a mighty leap.
Welcome newcomers to the fediverse!
Slightly off-topic: Can you guys access lemm.ee? It looks all messed up on my end… @[email protected]
Works fine for me. Try clearing your browser cache.
Welcome newcomers to the fediverse!
Weirdly it’s a similar feeling to moving to a way nicer house!

It really is lol that's a perfect way to put it.
You can smell the new plastics
Floors so clean, you can practically eat off of it!

You can definitely feel it.

Scotty, divert power to stabilizers.

Are you watching Strange New Worlds?

As a diehard Trekkie since 1987, I can say it’s already one of my top 3 shows

Might as well drop some links here for the star trek instance.

Oh damn, I remember people saying that everybody interested in Lemmy already joined by now. I’m really curious how things will look one week from now
My experience today was Apollo not working, learning about the amazing wefwef.app, and now here I am making my first post. I like it!
Voyager for Lemmy

Voyager is a beautiful mobile web client for Lemmy. Enjoy a seamless experience browsing the fediverse.

I bet on the 12th, there were a lot of lurkers on kbin/lemmy. Now that 3rd party mobile app folks are properly being forced off, they are properly making the jump and creating accounts. Welcome, if that's you!
I wouldn’t call it the first day of the Reddit migration.
The first day of forced migration.
It’s weirdly exciting to have a fresh start on a new platform. Hoping to see those numbers continue to grow!
Glad to be here! Just got to learn the ropes.
I’m excited to be here! I heard a lot about the digg migration to reddit around when I first started on there 10 years ago. Never thought I’d be a part of the next one so soon!
Honestly, I didn’t believe this would happen. I thought all who wanted to migrate have done this already and there would be maybe a couple hundred people joining us today. I’m glad I was wrong. Gives me hope in people of the Internet standing up for what they deserve.

I fully converted yesterday because I was holding out hope that reddit would do the right thing.

We vote with our dollars and our actions. Consider this a vote for freedom.

I made a Lemmy account a couple weeks ago and started getting familiar with the fediverse. Then I decided to create a different user on Lemmy.world so I think I registered this one yesterday.

For the last 30 days I’ve still used Reddit because it has the most activity and it’s been like “this is the last time!!” kinda feels. But now I’ve discovered wefwef, and I’m not going to be using Reddit anymore so here I am.

I think a lot of people are similar…nostalgia and ease of use kept everyone mostly using Reddit and now the people who care about the whole issue will start contributing here.

I accessed reddit through the Sync app and actually didn’t realise it was just going to stop working. I’m still not really sure what’s going on here, this is my first experience of the fediverse. I like learning new things.

Me too. When sync stopped working it was the kick in the pants I needed.

I used the official app once today and just felt dirty.

I haven’t even tried the official app, i went onto the website to look at the Sync sub just to check it wasn’t a temporary bug or anything and saw a load of links to here so thought I’d check it out.
The sooner we realize corporate control of social media was a massive mistake, the better the world will be. Imagine if corporate social media algos that drive engagement through ragebaiting hadn't existed for the last 10 years...

Man the servers got hit today didn’t they!

The future is looking bright

I’d like to say glad to bere here, but tbh it makes me sad to leave behind my Reddit account of almost a decade.

Lemmy look promising though (and still slightly confusing :)

Give kbin a shot if you find Lemmy confusing. I found it much more approachable personally.
I burned my 11 year reddit account with edits and it felt liberating.
You can really tell, as posts that used to have 1-2 comments now have 4-5. It’s nice chatting with y’all

It’s so wonderful that Reddit, by making a decision that benefits no user/mod/sub, and actively harms users/mods/subs, all in the name of corporate greed, gave Lemmy the boost it needed to become a viable alternative to Reddit.

Thank you, Spez. We couldn’t have done this without you.

Spez can go…
Fly a kite 😀🪁

Congratulations to the instance for it’s extraordinary growth!

Welcome everyone who popped over from reddit.

It’s important to remember you’re on the fediverse, a huge variety of websites running all sorts of software of which lemmy.world is just one server, and Lemmy itself is just one piece of software. There’s many other reddit-alikes like Lemmy, as well as software like Twitter, or Instagram, or Facebook, or YouTube.

Decentralization is strength. Try to spread out over instances with our users and our communities because instances can and do shut down, shut off federation, or otherwise become reddit.

This is supported by admins and users, there is no pot of venture capital money keeping instances running or paying admins. Keep that in mind.

I really do love it here.

Well, sorry for saying this folks, but I regret having deleted my Reddit account…

… before editing all my comments to point to Lemmy.

Just found out about the wefwef PWA app which is pretty damn good as an Apollo replacement. Hopefully it can be a native iOS app in the future. Definitely made me ease into Lemmy a lot easier. Hope good things for the future.
Wefwef is great. I think it’s better as a webapp though. No need to regress to an iOS app, that just locks others out (android users) and requires unnecessary access to private information.
Wefwef is good stuff, I've been using it for the last couple days and it's working great so far. Connect for Lemmy is good too, I keep switching between them.
Best Lemmy instance on the fediverse. I appreciate the work the admins here have done
We gotta pump those numbers up! Those are rookie numbers.
Such great news about Lemmy.world too
Glad to see folks coming over here, definitely shaping up into a preferable alternative :)

Glad to be here!

It’s astounding, seeing how fast new communities are being founded and populated. I’m not much of a “community starter” type, but I’m quite excited to find a new home for the shitpost-tier OC I make. I’m also sincerely fascinated to see how all these new places coexist/cross-pollinate.

Oddly enough, my reddit is fun app is working today after i was force logged out
Not properly tho. HOWEVER, if you use reddit on chrome, and click a media video (which SUCK on the official app), it will still open in RiF, so yeah, awesome.
I’m curious if anyone has made a “Here are the current apps for Lemmy” posts. The last one is a few days old.
I love it here, but the apps aren’t great yet. I’m banking on future releases and improvements. I’m running 4 apps and they all have issues :/
Trying Connect on Android and it seems to be the best so far. I thought Summit was lacking and Jerboa looks worse imo. This one is just lacking some small qol features that would go a long way like how images and comment threads are handled.
really hope an IOS Lemmy app comes out

Just open safari and go to wefwef.app

It’s a web app in the style of Apollo and it works for iOS, Android, and desktop.

Huh. Interesting
Is there a way to track the activity change/traffic for Reddit? Especially now, given that 3rd party API access is mostly cut off.
