Lemmy.world announces blocking communities via Discord - Lemmy.world
This is in regard to Lemmy.world blocking piracy communities from other
instances [https://lemmy.world/post/3193108]. This post is not about whether you
agree with the decision. It’s about how the admins informed their users. A week
ago Lemmy.world announced their Discord server
[https://lemmy.world/post/2809416]. This wasn’t very well received (about 25%
downvotes, which is rather bad compared to other announcements). The comments on
that post were turned off, presumably to avoid backlash. Before that,
announcements about the instance used to be posted to
[/c/]. This time, the information was posted on the
Discord server instead. I don’t agree with this. Having to use a proprietary
platform to participate in an open-source one goes against the very purpose for
me, especially when the new solution isn’t really an improvement (as before the
information about the platform was closer to it).

Update: Soon to buy my first printer - Lemmy.world
This is an update to my previous post [https://lemmy.world/post/2345894]. It’s
not a valuable read if you haven’t read that one or just aren’t interested in my
personal choices. Thanks to all of You who replied to me. I did settle on the
Prusa MINI+. You recommended many other models. Many people seem to have shared
what they had if they knew it worked fine, which is understandable, as we don’t
typically have dozens of different ones to compare first-hand. Ender series was
especially common among these, though came with warnings it might be prone to
requiring manual repairs. You also reaffirmed me that Prusa is a safe choice.
From what I understand, the MINI+ isn’t the cheapest available and it lacks some
features, such as multicolor printing or resuming job after blackout, but it is
the printer to last. If I were to buy a second cheap printer, I would probably
go for Ender 3 and prepare to tinker with it. If I had the budget to buy a
professional one, I’d probably get Prusa MK3 or MK4. By the way I’m buying the
kit version. Hopefully I’ll learn more by assembling it. It can’t be much more
difficult than IKEA furniture, right?
Soon to buy my first printer - Lemmy.world
I’m a 3D printing wanna-be, not even an amateur. Have seen a few printers,
helped assemble one long time ago, played with the software a little, though I
have never actually printed anything myself yet. I decided to spend some saved
money on a printer for myself. My goals are getting hands-on experience with
printing and being able to use it as a tool in projects/everyday life. I’m
considering an FFF one rather than SLA one, mostly due to the toxicity of resin
(and costs). Printing speed is unimportant. Print quality matters, but only to
some satisfactory degree and it’s not paramount. I imagine I might buy another
one in a few years, so I don’t need a printer for life, but it needs to serve
sufficiently for this period. I’m open to the possibility of repairing/upgrading
it, if it can be done reliably by an amateur. I’m strongly considering Prusa
MINI+, but it’s not a final decision and I’ll be happy to hear your feedback.
I’m posting this here in hopes that if I’m making a mistake, people more
competent than me will stop me. If there’s anything else you think I should
know, I’ll be happy to hear it.

Observation: Two types of Fediverse users

Observation: Two types of Fediverse users - Lemmy.world
I just wanted to share my thoughts with you. I will appreciate hearing what you
think. I’ve been reading about P92 and fedipact. I have an observation which I
think helps understand why our opinions on the matter are so different and hear
out the other side. This article
[https://privacy.thenexus.today/should-the-fediverse-welcome-surveillance-capitalism/]
had the biggest impacts on these thoughts. I think there are mainly two types of
Fediverse users. To make writing about them easier, I’m gonna use made up terms:
Intensivists and Extensivists. Intensivists are people who came here because
they grew tired with the mainstream corporate-controlled media. They embrace
Fediverse for it’s freedom, openness and privacy. They will see the platform as
successful if it stays decentralized. Extensivists are people, who pay most
attention to functionality. They want the platform to grow, spread and will
consider it successful if it serves many people well. These two groups aren’t
opposite of each other. On the contrary, they mostly share values. I believe
neither would stay here very long if the other’s expectations weren’t met at
all. Moreover, I believe most users of both groups dislike Facebook and Meta.
The difference between them is their priorities. For intensivists driven by
their strive for privacy, federating with Meta defeates their whole purpose for
using Fediverse. For extensivists however it’s a more complex issue. They weight
the upsides (new users, more content, interoperability) against the risks
(privacy, bad moderation, EEE). Those people’s opinions will vary.

Reddit remnants [initialisms explained] - Lemmy.world
This community is clearly a continuation of r/AmItheAsshole subreddit. People
seem to take it for granted that people know this and understand the basic
concepts. However, new people will come, some of whom have not seen the original
subreddit. For those people there’s no explanation as to what’s going on here.
Here I explain the basic concepts and initialisms for the new users (basically
what’s missing from the sidebar). Below I encourage a discussion on whether this
should continue. AITA – Am I The Asshole…? WIBTA – Would I Be The Asshole…? YTA
– You’re The Asshole NTA – [You’re] Not The Asshole NAH – No Assholes Here ESH –
Everyone Sucks Here On the original subreddit there was a bot which, after
certain time, would highlight the most upvoted response and there was a
subreddit-exclusive karma system. But, should this community really follow the
old subreddit’s ways? Since this is a fresh start, perhaps it’s the right time
to discuss and rethink whether the system is right. I give you no right answer,
it’s an open question.
By the way, I'm curious what you think of posting this link in this community. While there are certainly more fitting communities, it's not really offtopic here. Does it belong? Is it better to post things to the big and broad communities, the small and specific ones, or perhaps both? How does that impact Lemmy's growth?
