Florida Gov. DeSantis signs bill ending permanent alimony

Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a measure that will overhaul the state's alimony laws, after three vetoes of similar bills and a decade of emotional clashes over the issue.

@amydiehl
I know someone whose ex-husband walked out just before Christmas circa 1972. It was the era when she had no skills to fall back on apart from being able to support a husband.

She still gets a small cheque from him (they are both in their late eighties now).

He deducts it from his income tax.

Maybe for GQP leaders this needs to be framed as “this law will cause deadbeats like you to lose a tax deduction.”

@amydiehl I'm of the opinion that I'll just make a prenup if I'm gonna get married. Like it or not, marriage isn't just a love thing, its a legal contractual agreement and that part of it can't be ignored. I'd just choose to keep my own property and finances completely separate from hers, with the stipulation that if we have kids, we both take care of them financially and if things end up falling, god forbid, that we both will be protected from financial loss.
@amydiehl I wonder how bad this is going to affect the divorced women in the villages? Cuz they're the only ovaried-americans he cares about
