Just installing Ubuntu on the ol' MacBook Air
@ActionRetro have you had luck with getting the camera to work? I've been running linux on a MacBook Air for a while now, but no dice. I guess I should be grateful for getting the microphone to work.
@polishdub @ActionRetro you should load a special facetimehd firmware in order for it to work. I managed on my 2008 Macbook
@polishdub with Ubuntu 23.04 mine worked out of the box
@ActionRetro @polishdub must be the 2009-2011(?) 480p UVC iSight camera. Those show up as generic USB cameras and don't need firmware.
@distrohopper39b @polishdub ah yeah, mine's a 5,1
@ActionRetro @polishdub huh those have the facetime hd camera, must be connected through usb rather than pcie
@ActionRetro 2gb version? with that funky lan port?

@ActionRetro Which generation is that?

I have the MacBookAir6,2 from 2013 which took some digging to get working properly with Linux (most live CDs and installations give a black screen on boot unless adding “nomodeset” to the grub boot options)

Attached: 1 image Having no luck getting #Linux (or other alternative OSes) running on my Mac IIfx lately, I was feeling kind of down, and decided that I needed to have an easy win 😁 So I pulled my 2013 MacBook Air down from the shelf where it’s been sitting for the last 3 years (it used to be my daily driver until I replaced it with an MBP in 2020), wiped it clean, and installed #Lubuntu 22.04.2 on it. It wasn't too hard to get going - I had to tether to my phone in order to download the Broadcom wifi driver (but that's pretty well documented). The other tricky thing was that I was getting a black screen on boot, which required adding “nomodeset" to the grub config to fix. It's nice to see this machine feeling snappy again, but the question remains, what should I do with it? #RetroComputing (maybe, is it really retro when it's only a 10 year old machine?)

@smallsco @ActionRetro I have that same 2013 model! Used it every day until 2020 and it’s still in excellent condition. The laptop I bought to replace it just died a few days ago. Not even half the age. Bah! >_< I might resurrect mine with Fedora.
@ActionRetro oh no, snap. I’m avoiding Ubuntu now. And RedHat, it seems.
@ActionRetro does the battery good on Linux?
@ben testing that now haha, but seems good so far! at least as good as OSX
@ActionRetro well. Seems a fun project! Thank you for sharing!
@ActionRetro How's your WiFi performance? I've tried a couple distros (Fedora, Mint) on my 2011 2GB Air and it's been a bit flaky, yet remains solid under 10.15.
@kyanite 100% solid - I've been using it on the couch all day, no issue!
@ActionRetro Sweet, I'll see if I've got some better luck with Xubuntu soon, then!
