@brownjava If you really want to be depressed, you should hear the conversations Joey and I have re: attempting to constructively report this information to C-suites from the company, business unit, and top-talent perspectives only to hear their juvenile responses.

(Spoilers: … )

@rfbarraza exactly. And look, if you wanna pay me C-suite salaries so I can get that $5m house in Los Altos Hills with hired help and a 10 min commute, then I’m happy to be in the office 5 days a week. Just saying.

@brownjava I mean, put that aside for a moment. Let's attempt to look at this rationally.

C-suite is upset because:
1) they're budgeting for office space that's going unused
2) they feel there is an injustice that their presence is required while others are not
3) they feel employees could be MORE productive if they were in the office

Analytics show that ICs and their first to second-level managers ACTUALLY perceive the OPPOSITE of (3) to be true.

(1) is what the Cs are paid for
(2) ... 🙄

@rfbarraza oh I totally agree.

I think a lot of companies are lucky because the industry lacks so much competition for talent right now because of the economy. In a world where people feel they can leave and go elsewhere there are serious retention issues here.

@brownjava I think what we're presently seeing is the slow death of golden handcuffs -and- engagement/innovation/inspiration/creativity.

The trends we see show that many people are finally realizing it's silly to be beholden when the intense effects these managerial attitudes have on your health. What’s the point of having all those shares if you’re going to have an alcohol-assisted heart attack before 50?

Just go in 9-5 and punch out so you can enjoy the quality of life we have left.

@rfbarraza the problem now though is that at least in many places, you basically need that golden-handcuffs-level compensation to even have a decent house and lifestyle.

That’s basically the Bay in a nutshell. Nobody /wants/ to work+commute 60+ hours a week. But your alternative is go work remote in a cheap red state. Which honestly is better in almost every way except (1) remote is isolating and (2) oh yeah, your rights might get taken away.
