I always regret the super high number of replies I get when I make a post about math, but I never remember that the next time I come up with one :|
I mean the replies are fine but it takes only a few hours of being inundated with maths trivia and discussion for me to lose my entire mind so...
I remember my math teacher in high-school saying I had an aptitude for math, I could be really good at it if I just wanted to apply myself. Idk what it's called when you're not bad at something, you might even be pretty good at it, but doing more than a little bit is physically painful. That's my relationship with math >_>
@eniko this is kinda like me and IT support work. I am very good at it but I hate it with every fibre of my being.
@eniko I think that's one of the flavors of "gifted"
@aeva I would like to return this gift for store credit
@eniko @aeva Sorry, we only offer straight-exchanges. Would you be interested in an extra couple inches of arm-span? How about a slightly increased sense of smell?
@scottmichaud @aeva actually my sense of smell is pretty bad so I would totally take that second one >_>

@eniko same here. "You'd be awesome if you applied yourself" I LITERALLY CAN'T UNLESS I WANT TO EXHAUST MYSELF FOR DAYS AFTER. IF NOT WEEKS.

The curse of ADHD. If I ✨ focus ✨, I burn out. If I take meds, I'm a loser. If I hyperfocus, "why can't you do that normally".

Fuck non-adhd-everyone's opinion. And that unfortunately includes my mum.

#adhdrant

@root to be clear in my case its not adhd or anything like that I just despise having to do math
@eniko that's fair and I'm sorry for yelling. Your experience just sounded all too familiar to mine with ADHD and how everyone was like "oh if he only applied himself" ---nnnnnngh
@root no worries, it sounds similarly irritating but more all encompassing, so that does sound shitty
@eniko @root did math used to hit you

@eniko this is me, but with english. The teachers always said I could be an english teacher if I applied myself because I was very good at spelling and grammar, the problem with that is I always hated how inconsistent the english language was

(I was never good at math but could usually get through it eventually)

@eniko same, good at it, hate doing it. I had a meeting with my elementary number theory prof because I was concerned I was going to fail the class and she tried to talk me into double majoring in math.
Tl;dr for elementary number theory is, "you know 2 + 2 = 4, but this class explores WHY".
@eniko Maybe your mind subconsciously remembers how much your replies get flooded, but your brain goes "No - show your work. Prove it.".
@eniko tbh if it gets to literally physically painful, I don't think it's ever just a dislike of something.
@eniko I feel like there has to be a deliciously complex German word for this.
@eniko I suppose you're having to spend a certain amount of time reading each reply. Now imagine there were no replies. Gotcha!
