Petition: Nationalise all public transport and make it free for everyone at all times

Much "public" transport is owned by companies running it for profit. It can be expensive and unreliable, making it an unviable alternative to cars for most people. Nationalise public transport and make all journeys free, to discourage car use, encourage exercise and boost the economy.

Petition: Reverse the decision to block the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill

I want the Government to reverse their decision to block the Gender Recognition Reform (Scotland) Bill, as this legislation contains important provisions for the LGBT community in Scotland. We are a United Kingdom, and the UK Government should not block devolved legislation.

@cassolotl there are definitely some bits of public transport that should always be free. I can't argue for everything everywhere, but you don't ask, you never get.
@cassolotl e.g. for anyone moving house, give them a free pass for local public transport to try to break the car habit. Particularly people moving to newbuild estates, where connection to public transport should be a condition for getting permission to build.
@cassolotl please do the whole world.
@cassolotl Give me some costs. What’s the total price (let’s include the profit margins - we can’t assume a saving) of the services you wish to subsidise. I assume National Rail, London Underground, all local buses, trams, rail etc. How much will that equate to per tax payer? Those who have chosen expensive commutes will pay less; those who have less environmentally impactful lifestyles will pay more. I suspect I‘m the latter and I want to know how much.
@cassolotl currently really liking the £2 single bus fare they're doing currently, £4 for a return is still a bit much however. train prices on the other hand definitely are awful consistently..
@cassolotl This "all public transport" includes the airlines?
@TimWardCam I think probably not, because as far as I know, in the UK air travel has never been or claimed to be "public" (publicly owned).
@cassolotl To me "public transport" is "transport" on which the "public" can ride if (usually) they buy a ticket. (And in response to your point, how long ago was it that BA and/or precursor bits of it were publicly owned? - not "never", surely?)
@TimWardCam Oh it's one of *those* kinds of internet conversations. 😑
@cassolotl I wonder how many signatures this got? I mean I feel like it would never actually happen, but I'd be interested in the supporting numbers.
@follpvosten The number of signatures is there on the petition if you click the link
@cassolotl ah, my mistake. I clicked the second link and it just gave me an empty page, didn't try the first one.
@follpvosten Ohh, I didn't realise the second link was empty! Heh, no worries. :)
