Screen door was my preferred method, too. I had a mobile screen in doorframe size which I could even insert between different rooms, which was nice.

I added 'clicker training' to my door regime with the 2 cats back then, i.e. whenever I wanted to reward a shown wanted behaviour (breaking the stare etc.) the cat immediately got a treat. Timing is of the essence here, to not reward the behaviour before or after.
