Today's historic #photo of the day: The junction of the Cootamundra-Tumut line and the Batlow line, with semaphore signals in situ about a year after the last regular* #train at Gilmore, NSW, January 27 1985.

Gilmore is 529km from Sydney on a branch line from Cootamundra to Tumut. (Note the 529 km post at left). It was also the junction for a branch to Batlow which until 1957 ran to Kunama.

Passenger trains ran to Batlow until 1975 and Cootamundra to Tumut railmotors continued until late 1983.

The entire line from Cootamundra to Batlow has been disused since 1984.
Whilst passenger trains ceased in late 1983 and goods trains very soon thereafter, the section from Tumut to Batlow via Gilmore re-opened from December 1988 until May 1990 as a tourist railway known as Mountain High Railway. However this was short-lived, due partly to its relatively remote location and partly to prohibitive legal costs and compliance requirements.
Gilmore station continues to rust away today.
@railmaps I got to Batlow in a freight in 1980 - I wanted to travel on the line because it had so many wiggles on the map 🙂
