#EndStageCapitalism sucks. I miss the old days when…
@clmerle Or, in England, "follies" on their estates. Oh, for the good old days.

@clmerle

I remember learning about the concept of "noblesse oblige". Essentially, your position of nobility obligates you to provide for the people of lesser stature.

Billionaires of the First Golden Age were aping the aristocrats that came before them by providing for the little people.

Billionaires of the Second Golden Age believe in meritocracy: their wealth is earned by their own brilliance, and they will damn well do with it as they please.

@clmerle
And great observatories like the Yerkes, Wilson, and Lick.
@clmerle He’s not a billionaire, but George R. R. Martin’s vanity projects are actually wonderful. He’s one of the main reasons Meow Wolf exists, and he also decided to rehabilitate an abandoned movie theater and tourist railroad in his hometown.
@clmerle You know, I was just thinking the same thing!
@clmerle I was thinking about paying artists and creating gardens
@clmerle and they fail to realize that most of the public works extend their name for generations instead of ending up as a failed business in a couple of years that somehow gives them a tax break.
@Notbhavn @clmerle Yes but tax break important or something 🤑

@clmerle

Sackler family: "I bet you don't, actually."

@clmerle

Le mécénat est bien loin de nous, maintenant...

@clmerle I don't want billionaires to exist. I want proper taxation so they don't exist. I want taxation to pay for museums and libraries. Tax the rich.
@clmerle now their vanity projects include:

- tax evasion
- making life worse for regular people
@clmerle they used to build garden cities for their workers to get them out of slums now they are happy to see their workers living in cars that they don’t own on a car park that someone else built.

@clmerle But why is there a rocket?

Space exploration isn't a bad thing. It's very important.

@clmerle Not to forget archaeological research.
@clmerle Yes I 've been saying this for years. In Scotland we have lots public building that date from the "great" depression when government created work for people instead of starving them.
@clmerle Boosted for Bezos Penis Rocket
