Strolled around grnd level of Welly’s new convention/events centre #takina this week.
Great welcoming vibe + architectually (certainly externally), a distinctive building with great shapes & design elements.

Directly across the road from TePapa & down the street from Q arts hotel - #takina has created an enlarged vibrant arts/events precinct within the CBD.

Plus new inner city housing precinct #Paddington nearing completion.

#Wellington feels dynamic. No “dying city” as Key once opined.

@NZedAUS
Was this that open-air carparking space, with the big square planters that had some pohutakawa (?) trees in it?
@aligorith dont think so

@NZedAUS
Hmm... I wonder what used to be there then 🤔

The apartments on the corner with the marine stuff shop on the ground floor and a bunch of colourful kite / wind-sock things seem to still be there, but I can't remember what used to be in that space where this new building used to sit.

@aligorith google old Te Papa images??
@aligorith you’re right old car park…saw it on elevated image of TePapa construction

@NZedAUS Takina is beautiful, and it’s already working to attract events to the city —the #Meetings2023 tradeshow was in Wellington for the first time, thats HUGE news for the events industry and #Takina was a big draw card to get it here.

On the flip side, Paddington is a disgraceful use of a huge inner block (it should've been 6 stories minimum; not 2) and we will be regretting this wasted opportunity for decades.

@heyhemi appreciate your position on densification…but surely there needs to be a real diversity of housing options - wasn’t Paddington deliberately a townhouse precinct as opposed to high rise?

@NZedAUS my understanding; it was a compromise because the existing pipes couldn’t handle a larger development.

I’m not sure who has more blame; the council, or the developer —but either way, the city was robbed of a more appropriate development of one of the most valuable pieces of land in the city.

@NZedAUS definitely agree diversity of housing options is important!! Med-dense townhouses in the ring suburbs should be highly encouraged!
@heyhemi yes Paddington development is absolutely prime location
@NZedAUS the houses are so tiny as well! We saw one on Airbnb, thinking to have a little stay-cation in the city, but it looked like it was literally ‘roll out of bed into the kitchen’ material.
@NZedAUS I feel so sorry for those who bought in at the peak of the housing bubble. The fomo was real. 😢
@heyhemi now that is very small
@NZedAUS Key was wrong about everything.
