Last time I quipped that I’ve successfully updated Docker for Mac I’ve got an avalanche of replies to try https://orbstack.dev

Which I did.

My friends, those reply guys were 100% right. This blows Docker, Colima & what have you completely out of the water. It’s a drop-in replacement for the docker backend & JUST WORKS. It feels faster, but most importantly the update works.

It also has incredibly cool lightweight Linux Machines that I can best describe as WSL—all with full Rosetta support.

It looks like they’re gonna charge money eventually https://docs.orbstack.dev/faq#free but we’ve paid for VMware before and worst case I’ll go back into sad Docker Desktop land.

Update: OrbStack already shared their plans: https://twitter.com/OrbStack/status/1656326409995055104

TLDR: free for private, $8/month for business.

“We're close to settling on initial pricing plans: Free for personal non-commercial use (with potential Pro plan for advanced features) $8/user/mo for commercial and business use Thoughts or concerns? Open to changing this.”

@hynek I don't have a problem paying Docker either, but that said, paying them doesn't make the app any better or more reliable.

As long as it's reasonable, I would be more likely to use + pay for an app that makes my container experience better.

@hynek ah nice. I've also seen it and would be open to try it. they don't have any pricing info for "later" which is a bit of a concern (but if using the thing all the time may be fine)
@froztbyte “will take reasonable money soon” >>>> “it’s freeeeeee! (until VCs start squeezing our bro balls)”
@hynek do you know if bind mounts are any faster than on Docker Desktop?
@oinopion everything feels much snappier, but you’ll have to try yourself. it’s really simple and easily reversible: https://docs.orbstack.dev/docker/file-sharing

@hynek thanks, I’ll try it 🙌
@hynek excellent, working well for me so far - I’ve been looking for something like this for a long time. Will happily pay for it too, if it means it keeps getting developed and I don’t have to deal with docker.app anymore.
@hynek I’ve been using Orbstack for over a month now and I’m just blown away by how seamless it is specially IPv6 on MacOS. This is the first docker desktop alternative for macOS which has native support for IPv6 built. If this ends up being a paid product I’d be happy to do so.
@netops2devops I’m a simple man: I’m already ecstatic that it doesn’t eat 20% CPU while idle 🎉
