Third spruce tree on the left@rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh The only way to crack that problem (spam on USENET) would be to implement newsgroup moderation. Which IS a thing I'm surprised to find out - the protocol and software supports it.
I guess by the time I phased out of newsgroup usage (mid 00s? it was hard to find a free news server) I had never participated in one.
@rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh My vote would be to piggyback newsgroup traffic and proper reply threading on top of ActivityPub. I mean, conceptually, Lemmy/kbin mags/comms are no different from a newsgroup.
