I think we can all agree that if Reddit’s recent bullshit ends up meaning people go back to running old school forums it’ll be the absolute funniest possible outcome
@leigh USENET is looking better every day
@charles_buckley @leigh The biggest problem with Usenet is it got overwhelmed with spam. If something were done about that, it could become viable for communication again.

@rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh The only way to crack that problem (spam on USENET) would be to implement newsgroup moderation. Which IS a thing I'm surprised to find out - the protocol and software supports it.

I guess by the time I phased out of newsgroup usage (mid 00s? it was hard to find a free news server) I had never participated in one.

@rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh My vote would be to piggyback newsgroup traffic and proper reply threading on top of ActivityPub. I mean, conceptually, Lemmy/kbin mags/comms are no different from a newsgroup.

Imagine following alt.tv.babylon5 *as a hashtag*.

@tezoatlipoca @rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh 🤞 someone bring back Forté Free Agent kbin edition and i'm in
@vga256 @rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh Holy shit Forte Free Agent was a good piece of software. They don't write em like they used to. Forte just *worked*.
@tezoatlipoca @rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh 😅 i sure got a lot of mileage out of that program back in the day.

@vga256 @tezoatlipoca @rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh Agent was SOLID. One of the better Windows 3.1 applications I used at the time.

I like sharing my Windows 3.1 desktop from that time whenever topics like this come up. You can see the Internet stuff on the bottom left. It was brand new to me at the time!

@zorinlynx @vga256 @tezoatlipoca @rodneylives @charles_buckley @leigh I love this screenshot so much; thank you for sharing it. Just curious, how did ”Lock the PC with bios PW” work?
