The Trevor Project
@nimblebit This has 90 boosts and only 11 favs... Is it resetting every time you edit?
@finagle I don’t think so… This is what Ivory shows me:
@nimblebit Ok cool. I'm looking at it from the web interface of a different instance so it's probably just out of sync.
@finagle your instance shows the likes and boosts from its known network. Hachyderm must be aware of different instances than masto dot ai, therefore the numbers might never match

@nimblebit

@nimblebit No.

Donate whatever you've budgeted to donate, regardless, upfront, rather than hold charity hostage to getting eyeballs on you.

Charity first, attention second.

@Hyperlynx I considered this but thought that getting the Trevor Project in front of thousands of eyeballs would be better than a silent donation. I don’t have a specific amount budgeted for this.

@nimblebit I didn't mean donate and say nothing, I meant donate and say "this is a great charity, we donated $X, you should too".

Making your donation amount conditional on the amount of attention your post gets is shitty. I get that it's not at all uncommon, but it's still shitty to use a charity as an advertising vehicle, and I would yell at others doing the same.

@Hyperlynx i’m not sure why you deleted this. it’s really impressive stuff. maybe for an encore you can scold a school bake sale
@derekvanvliet because after thinking about it further, I considered your advice to "delete this". That toot was harsher than necessary, and escalates further than I should have.

@derekvanvliet but go on, then. Where am I wrong?

If I've erred, I will indeed delete my toots and apologise for my mistake.

@derekvanvliet because it sure looks to me like a business piggybacking on a charity to get advertising!

@derekvanvliet

Well... after sitting and thinking about it: but so what? I'm not raging against the machine, here, I'm raging against a small indie company that can't just pull a fat stack of cash from an advertising budget.

@nimblebit, I apologise. If you'd like me to delete my toots, I will, or I can leave them up as a mark of my stupidity.

@Hyperlynx @derekvanvliet No worries, it is up to you! Thanks for the favorite!
@Hyperlynx this is a lousy way to respond to someone trying to do some good. honestly you should delete this
@nimblebit This is a great thing, but it made me re-wonder somethinng. Will the fediverse need the veracity policy Twitter and Facebook never had? I think we must. The question is, what does that end up looking like? I don’t know, but I think I have an idea for how it could at least begin.
@nimblebit any upper limit on that?
@marbuka The total amount of money in our bank account I suppose 🀣

@nimblebit Done and done.

Especially because of the charity in question - very important for some people I know.
Thank you.

@nimblebit I've made a $10 donation too, in honour of your post!
@nimblebit wooooo! well done everyone and thanks NimbleBit!πŸ‘πŸ‘πŸ‘
@nimblebit
