A CITY ON MARS

Earth is not well. The promise of starting life anew somewhere far, far away—no climate change, no war, no Twitter—beckons, and settling the stars finally seems within our grasp. Or is it? Critically acclaimed, bestselling authors Kelly and Zach Weinersmith set out to write the essential guide to a glorious future of space settlements, but after years of research, they aren’t so sure it’s a good idea.

@ZachWeinersmith

I'm sure this will be great in November. Please could you write a book about why book publishers insist on promoting a book months before it's available?

Personally speaking there are so many books that I think "I would buy this immediately if it were available" and I'm pretty sure many of them I don't ever get around to buying because I forget about it within the intervening months.

I never pre-order, because, well I don't see any benefit. Worse, what if I pre-order a book and then before it comes the author does something really bad?

I'm sure there *is* a good reason for this, I just don't know it. I also wonder if it might be a bit antiquated, as in, there was once a good reason, but the logic no longer applies (because, for example, it's now possible to buy books immediately online).

I just don't get it.

@allanderek @ZachWeinersmith Pergamon is British, so it's probably July 11.
@TomSwirly @ZachWeinersmith
According to the links from the website they all say available Nov 02/2023.
@allanderek @ZachWeinersmith Whaaa? Well, then I agree with you, it's crazy!!!
@allanderek Gaming the top sales lists. Preorders count the first week of sales and top lists rank based on week 1 sales. That's it. That's the whole story. And it's terrible.
@ZachWeinersmith
Thanks, that's horrible. At least it's still logic that's applicable.
@ZachWeinersmith I met him once at the Barnes and Noble where I worked when I was in high school. Not there for any press or publicity thing, turns out he just lived in Missoula, MT and he just happened to be shopping when I worked there. Very nice guy.

@ZachWeinersmith What, you think humans can't live and thrive on the frigid, dark, arid, airless, lifeless, abrasive, poisonous, and radioactive deserts of Mars?

You have not reckoned with the awesome power of Capitalism™!

The Free Market Fairy™ will wave her magic wand Innovation™ and the red sands will become a veritable incubator of products, spreading the free market to the asteroids, and even the stars!!

/sarcasm of course, irony RIP 2020.

I'll have to buy this book.

@ZachWeinersmith I love SMBC, so you've already sold me.
@ZachWeinersmith ignoring the fact that the book content alone seems uber interesting, for me, a side benefit is that spouses teamed up to do this, which takes the cool factor (for me) up another level! 💕
