Teaching history classes, if I want to understand what AI can do in place of my students, I'd better start by deciding what I expect my students to do in the first place.

AI can offer a decent, if vague summary of the armed forces desegregation process after World War II. But even prior to ChatGPT, I probably wanted students to hone historical thinking *skills* by way of that episode, rather than just be aware of some details of it.

@gallimore as a general principle, I have always argued learning is accomplished by the learner and external experiences are assigned with the hope of encouraging important cognitive behaviors. What uses of AI might encourage the application and development of cognitive activities involved in critical thinking? What strikes me about AI in chat mode is how flexible it is in such interactions.
