It’s only in the last few years I’ve been able to set a book down if I’m not into it/hate it /at the wrong time & place for it. Previously I felt almost guilty not to finish a book - like I was letting myself & the book down!

#BookClub choices I really try to finish, but hanging on to the grim end can often leave me with a reading block.

Replying to @downonthepharm Reading is for FUN! If your book is feeling like a chore, you don’t have to finish it. ❤️ #library #libraries #librariesoftiktok #librariansoftiktok #librarian #librarytiktok #read #booktok #dnfsis #dnf #Inverted

There are some books that I still finish as a bit of an endurance exercise - usually when they are beautifully written but just not for me.

My bestie & I do a weekly readalong and we found #YoungMungo a really hard slog. At times we contemplated #DNF as it’s so tense, such a toxic set up and unrelentingly miserable - but the writing allowed us to finish it and then - vitally - reach for another read with delight. @drneevil I only rarely entirely DNF a book - I mostly read books I own, so I put stuff back on the shelf. I can count on my fingers the number of times I knew I would pick up a particular book again

@mjjzf Oooh, I’ve been attempting an ‘unread’ challenge so I can clear some space.
But I do find myself keeping ones I know I’ll never read again as loaners.

But then to my mind book reading and book collecting are two entirely separate hobbies!

@drneevil @aishasie Finish usually. But also “eventually”. There are some books that take me years to finish 🤷🏻‍♀️

@h5e @aishasie I love that dedication though!

If years, I presume you have other reads on the go also?

@h5e @drneevil Yeah same! I've actually made a separate Goodreads shelf for "paused" books - where I know I do want to continue reading, but my headspace or whatever doesn't allow for this one right here right now.

And I also have an "abandoned" shelf for books where I do just decide they're not worth even my future time, but only a handful of books hit that.

@aishasie @h5e I have the abandoned shelf but paused is a brilliant idea!
Going to tell my friend about it on Thursday because I think we’ll both find it useful! We are using both goodreads (for years) and StoryGraph (more recently).

And then I can remove the ones in my currently reading list that have been sat there for years!

@drneevil well, if its a good book, I will not sleep before I finish - even if I know I should rather go to sleep.

if its dragging, I might let it go. but its tough for me to not finish a book before I start the next one.

@cy It’s my preference too.

And I’m absolutely the same - I’d happily stay up till the early hours finishing a particular tome…though morning me might rue it, I rarely ever regret it!

How to lose the time war was one I had to read in a near single sitting!

@drneevil I’ve let go of the guilt and occasionally don’t finish. I figure life is too short and I don’t want to make other, possibly more deserving books sad by not reading them. :)

@sierrakim I LOVE THIS!

What a great way to look at it! See brain, it’s a good thing!

@drneevil I'm usually conservative about which book to read. Mostly I read the first chapter or two I assess whether I care to know what happens after. When I start reading, I almost always finish the book, but occasionally I don't care to read the sequel
@lffontenelle That’s intriguing! The try before you buy approach to reading. I d not considered that before. Brilliant!
@drneevil Do not finish occasionally and finish usually are the same thing.

@Oozenet They are!

Language is so tricky sometimes - am hoping that the thread above helped contextualise that I was looking more for the emotional sense of it. As a reader, in your mind do you tend to finish or not… but yes, I totally messed that up semantically 😱

@drneevil While affect is primary, to be sure of it one must always make sure the tool is efficient.
@drneevil This is where reading books in a multiplex fashion helps me. I frequently have different books that I pick up under different circumstances, so I'm not reading just one book at a time and don't get stuck by that One Book.

@ariaflame Oooh thank you!

Excellent technique!

@ariaflame And I love that ‘One Book’!
