As an experiment, I've done a brief review/overview of the Toot! app for iPhone/iPad:

➡️ https://fedi.tips/toot-for-iphone-ipad/

Would you want me to do more of these overviews for other Fediverse apps? If so, is this format okay?

I've tried to keep the review brief and readable for people who are scrolling through lots of app overviews at once.

Toot! for iPhone & iPad | Fedi.Tips – An Unofficial Guide to Mastodon and the Fediverse

An unofficial guide to using Mastodon and the Fediverse

@feditips Yeah, i'd love to read them all, being new to the fediverse.
@feditips yeah, awesome, would certainly want to see more. What about tusky for android next? hmm

@bgtlover

Just working on it now 👍

I'm going to wait a bit before publishing though, as there's a major new update released yesterday which isn't in F-Droid yet.

@feditips I use Toot! and I thought your capsule review was accurate and helpful. In general, I would welcome capsule reviews of apps from somebody who knows the fediverse.

@heidilifeldman @feditips

Comparison reviews with other Fediverse apps would also be helpful. Like, is it worth the price as compared to the other/free apps?

@aka_quant_noir @heidilifeldman @feditips
Love seeing you taking this on. A central place for comparing +/- of various ways to access the fediverse would be extremely useful. I have not found one satisfactory way to access all features I want and have begun a list of what’s wrong with each experience. I would love one central location to share and discuss these aspects of fedi usage. I feel that user experience may be the main obstacle to growth here.

@feditips
With your deep experience, ot's worth sharing more details around __why__ you liked X or Y: better than other apps? Helped you do something faster? Benefits of features are important. I liked the brevity but kind of wished this was just the TLDR; and you'd have more details below.

Agree with Toot!'s odd hiding of the search feature, took me forever to find it.

@feditips Perfect format: concise and useful, lots of screenshots and no SEO bullshit.

The only thing that could be improved is having a faster way to navigate through the enlarged screenshots. I mean, skipping to the next or previous image without having to go back to the main page and click another thumbnail.

But this is nitpicking. Thanks for optimizing this for human readers, not for Google points.

@feditips this is really useful as someone who just joined yesterday :-)
@feditips It looks good to me. I like the closed-source/etc. rundown at the top of the article, and the bullet points at the end are great.

@feditips

I cherish the brevity of it. 🙂

I'm perfectly happy with Megalodon but would gladly read short reviews like these! Thanks for all the tips, btw!

@feditips i love this and would love to see more reviews of other apps and a bit more detail. But I love toot and it seems everyone jumped on the mona train

@feditips tbh it's nice to see a review that doesn't read like the below, for a change.

"Therre are many <x> to choose from"
[...paragraph...]
[Ad]
"There is a wide variety of <x> out there"
[...paragraph...]
[Ad]
"So which <x> should you choose?"
[...paragraph...]
[Ad]
"Should it be <y>?"
[...paragraph...]

@bitflipped

Hahaha! Yeah, this is one of the advantages of having zero interest in algorithms or adverts.

I'm just trying to get useful info to human beings!

@feditips Yes please. And at the end, if I can be so bold, a feature grid showing what mobile app has what features? I currently use two different apps (Toot! and Metatext) cause each has a feature I like that the other doesn’t, but there’s probably an app that has both of those features (can’t recall what they are now, but one has true edit and the other has “remove and repost” which is maybe the same but confuses me.

@cordeliane

Thanks for the feedback!

By the way, just in case you missed it, Metatext is no longer maintained as the lead developer had to take a break for health reasons.

@feditips @cordeliane can you do apps on ios test for calckey?

@Ciechom @cordeliane

I'm trying to keep it simple for the moment, it could get really complex if I test every Masto app for every Masto API-compatible Fedi platform.

But I will make a note!

@feditips @cordeliane sure! Calckey is also a minority in the fediverse so I know it's not a priority but I'm still grateful for you even taking it into consideration.

@Ciechom @cordeliane

I will try to give Calckey more visibility anyway, I'll add an article about it to the site 👍

@feditips @cordeliane cool, I think diversifying the software on which fediverse runs is important. I can't wait to read this article!

@feditips I like the idea. In fact, I went ahead and purchased #Toot.

The only thing is can you please tell me how to resize the font? It’s hard to see anything and I can’t find it in Settings

@zyz

Yes, it's in your iPhone's own settings.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Larger Text > Larger Accessibility Sizes, switch this on and set it to the size you want using the slider at the bottom of the screen.

This large size will be used in the Toot! app as well as other compatible apps on your phone.

@feditips ahh!

It doesn’t seem to respond to the already enlarged settings of the phone. LARGE font is sorta my default 🫤

@feditips maybe this is large font for the app 🤔

@zyz

I tried it on the largest possible setting using the slider, and it was really huge even in Toot! (single words were too big to fit on the screen!). You should definitely be seeing huge fonts if you're setting them?

Are you on the latest version of the iPhone operating system?

@feditips I’ll readjust the settings to see if it kicks the app into gear at a more appropriate time and get back to you.

(Also, my system is up to date)

Thank you 🙏🏼

@feditips ok… here’s the thing… you’re right!

But it’s not a 1:1 size ratio. Now I can read this comfortably (wish it had line spacing, but definitely usable), but everything else is one size bigger than I like

I’m going to play with this for awhile and see if I prefer it to Icecubes or Metatext. Right now I’m wishing for an app that’s somewhere in between

Thank again!
