How many of you have pulled the plug and deleted reddit already?
How many of you have pulled the plug and deleted reddit already?
I did today. My account was about 5.5 years old and I have to admit it was somewhat hard at the beginning. But to be honest I already don’t care anymore.
That API stuff was a huge shitshow that made me really angry. I even would have paid a subscription to be able to keep using Apollo. But if Reddit decides to bring people out of business they are not going to do business with me either.
I'm waiting on a data request for the rest of my history, though I did that 6mo ago for other reasons and still have it so if the delay is too long I'll just lose those months.
After that I'll probably keep my account for a while to spam moving to Lemmy until I get banned.
Not yet. I want to watch and participate in the absolute chaos happening. It's a train wreck, great entertainment.
But as soon as the API key is revoked I'm gone. Well I already spend more time here.
That's where I'm at. I think I like this place more than tildes from what I've seen.
There's still a few niche things that warrant keeping my account and using old.reddit for the time being. Mainly, I get most of my local city news from the local sub - I don't think Lemmy will ever be able to replace that
I haven’t yet. I’ll probably keep using Reddit until June 30th besides maybe the protest days next week. I’m not sure if I’ll delete my accounts after June 30th or not though in case I need it for a one-off use case in the future.
I will say that it’d be easier to delete my accounts now than a couple years ago. A couple years ago, I was trying to make sure I never lost access to my original Reddit account by changing my password to be more secure, but my password manager failed to save the new password. I got locked out of my original nearly 10 year old Reddit account with a bit of a rare username. The only reason I have access to it now is it’s still logged in through Apollo, but I guess I’ll lose it forever on June 30th. I guess it doesn’t matter if I’m trying to move here anyways.
I see no particular need to delete my account or any of its content, personally. I know it's everybody's own decision but frankly it strikes me as kind of needlessly destructive, like torching a restaurant because you no longer enjoy eating there. Other people still do, there's no reason to take it from them.
If Reddit evolves in such a way that I no longer find it useful or enjoy going there, I'll just stop. I'm actually happy if my old data remains useful to others - lots of times I go searching Google for information and wind up in an old Reddit thread, for example.
I requested my data this morning, once I get it, I'll delete my history. But reddit will almost certainly still be far too useful, and as long as old exists, my main access is there. Though I'll stop using it on my phone, but that's rare anyway.
There currently is simply no alternative, lemmy is still far too rough around the edges for mainstream-ish adoption, it even feels a bit too rough for me (mainly because it's more new.reddit meme inspired than text old.reddit and because accessibility is bad)
I've read comments from some people that got their requested data only several months after the request. In the meantime, I've used PowerDeleteSuite to pull a backup of everything it could find (read their issue tracker for how to work around some export quirks) and will let it replace all my posts with

as long as the API still works.
My plan is to drop and delete Reddit on June 30th.
What I have not figured out yet, is where to post my goodbye. Any ideas?
I've barely got any posts on there, so I've kind of just left my account for now. I'll purge it later on once I feel like all of my niche communities I need are elsewhere.
I however, do not visit it more than once a day now though, and I expect that frequency to drop-off (primarily for local level news right now - too small to expect them to migrate elsewhere for now)
I'm exploring my options.
As long as old.reddit exists and there is a large community, I'll be 'stuck' with Reddit. I'm not there for the platform - I'm there for the people. I'll go where the people go.
As far as mobile usage goes, I don't know. Without an 'Apollo for Lemmy' or 'Lemmy is Fun' - I'm hanging around waiting for something to happen.
Reddit is the longest I've had a social media account after Facebook - pushing in my 12th year. And I've participated in a lot of social media and message boards that came and went.
In my experience, websites sites die quickly when leadership prioritizes scraping profits over a user experience. And look, I completely understand and respect that companies need to earn revenue. However, it's a two-way relationship. Users will always flock to a more streamlined and accessible experience.
It's why Pandora > Shoutcast/iTunes Radio. It's why Spotify > Pandora. And it's why Netflix > Blockbuster. It's why after years of using Fark.com for news engagement, I joined Reddit. It gave me a far superior experience (not that Fark was ever bad).
I really like Lemmy. And I like the concept of federated spaces. But whether or not the concept is a big enough draw is really to be determined - especially without knowing what the mobile experience looks like.
All this to say.. I'll delete my account when it's no longer relevant. If I can get truly unique food and drink recommendations for my local city here, with enthusiastic participants all joining in the conversation - that's what I'll need to bury the past 12 years of online activity.
I literally just deleted my account as of a few minutes ago. Read the thread from Christian about him shutting down the Apollo app, read the thread about how shit the Reddit team was treating him (and presumably, they probably treated other third-party devs similarly), and decided that since I was trying to quit Reddit anyways, might as well pull the plug now.
I've been eying out the Fediverse stuff for a while now, but that was the final push to go and join this place to trial it out and see how I like it.
Mate I deleted my account as soon as they announced the API change.
I know that BS trajectory. Reddit has been killing off the mobile website for a while, probably going for the old reddit too.
Fuck 'em.
Yup - I was getting close to the point where I was going to delete my reddit in any case and make a new one - so that decision is easy.
Gonna watch the rest of this tranwreck of an AMA, then I'm out - account delete, Sync uninstalled
