What a coincidence!
@frauenfelder I'm shocked. Shocked.
@frauenfelder ID: the graph shows gun deaths vs guns owned. Most everybody is clustered in low/low corner and but the US of A is waaay up there in the top, very gun/very death, corner.

@EndlessMason @frauenfelder

Looking at the nice straight graph, the main cause is the very wide availability of guns.
It does not seem Americans are so very blood thirsty in comparison with the world.

@antipode77 @frauenfelder i don't think that matches reality. I'm pretty sure most of the people I know could be in a room with 9 or 10 guns and they wouldn't even negligent homicide someone, let alone doing a proper mass-murder.

You'd need to give out placebo guns to half the population and compare the reactions.

@antipode77 @EndlessMason @frauenfelder … but the argument from the gunholics is that more guns should lead to less shooting because there was a bigger chance the other side also has guns to fire back with. But no, largely unarmed people get shot.
@frauenfelder data from 2017. I suspect nz isn’t sitting that low after 2019. :(

@frauenfelder

I didn't have to "View Image" to guess what country is in the top right corner.

@frauenfelder . Looks like we are going to wipe out tourism and the hospitality industries not just in Florida but everywhere.
@frauenfelder according to RFK Jr it’s the anti-depressants, not the guns.

@frauenfelder The most shocking thing about this chart is that a gun in France kills more than three times as many people as a gun in NZ. Why??

(Nobody can possibly be shocked at the US at this point)

@frauenfelder I think it's just not enough thoughts and prayers.
@frauenfelder So it appears the French are way more dangerous with their guns than the US population. The US appears to have the same mis-use rate as others, which is a remarkable achievement.
@frauenfelder What happens to the curve if you plot instead of deaths per 100k, instead the number of people per 100k who used a gun to kill someone illegally?
@frauenfelder The U.S. homicide rate is 10.5-7.9 per 100,000 population vs Europe's less than 2 per 100,000. The U.S. rape is 7 times higher than the average for Europe. US robbery rates are 4 times higher than those in Europe. Also, US has the highest income inequality in the rich world and over the past 20–30 years and have also experienced the greatest increase in income inequality among rich nations. The link between wealth inequality and violence is well documented.

@frauenfelder

USA aims to be exceptional..

There are good and wrong ways to be exceptional.
This not a good way if we aim to respect human life.

@frauenfelder @notwhatwethink Clearly, we need more guns in the US. After all, people tell me guns make us safer.
@frauenfelder
Intersesting how the relation is linear. That mean, it is the guns, if I am thinking correctly.
@notwhatwethink
@Enema_Cowboy @frauenfelder
I think you are absolutely correct. What a great graph to prove this point that the GOP and gun crowd does not want to hear!
@frauenfelder
The clustering of data points near the origin and sparcity elsewhere suggests you should have used a logarithmic plot
@frauenfelder I can't belive it! </sarcasm> 😒
