What happens in Canada doesn't stay in Canada.

Climate change is coming for all of us.

@petergleick
And yet, some people STILL try to deny the reality of the existential threat we created for ourselves.
@petergleick we all live down stream and down wind
@petergleick
Climate change is already here.
@petergleick well it won’t “stay in Canada” and that’s wishful thinking and you would succeed better with science. Here’s the Truth: humankind accelerated by greed has destroyed the planet.

@artesianspring It's not wishful thinking. It's @petergleick's attempt at dark humor by referencing the Las Vegas tourism slogan "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas."

My guess is you're not familiar with the the slogan and took the statement at face value, thus ruining the joke. Because science was pretty much front and center in the original toot.

@packy @petergleick There’s not much funny or joke worthy about over 20,000 Canadians displaced over Climate Crisis that has eked its way down the east coast of the US. It’s an issue that needs addressed and we are all accountable.

@artesianspring @petergleick Please Google "DARK HUMOR". It's not trying to NOT address the issue or not hold people accountable.

You're acting like the OP wasn't being critical of the situation, when they 1000% were. Just accept that you read the post wrong and criticized someone for saying THE RIGHT THING.

@petergleick true, and interestingly, we aren’t doing a damn thing about China and India…apparently their hideously polluted air stays there???

@Computeforloot @petergleick It turns out the "we" can't do anything about China and India. But they can, and are. While China's stated goals are about 10 years less ambitious than most western countries, its lack of a powerful oil lobby kinda makes their plan more credible.

More accurately, the best thing anyone, anywhere, can do is lead the way. The leaders will develop and profit from the solutions everyone who follows will use.

@UrbanEdm @petergleick if only that were true - most of the world has cut back massively on coal use…but, according to NPR in 2023:

“China permitted more coal power plants last year than any time in the last seven years, according to a new report released this week. It's the equivalent of about two new coal power plants per week”

So, China is a serious problem- we can’t change the world unless they get onboard

@Computeforloot @petergleick Well, that is consistent with their stated goal of peaking in 2030 and then declining to zero by 2060.

Is it enough? No. But it doesn't change the fact that it's a factor outside of our control, and the best thing to do continues to be to find solutions that eliminate emissions without negative impact on lifestyle.

Like it or not, the second part is necessary in order to have a large scale impact.

@Computeforloot @petergleick Big part of world production got moved to China, yet their CO2 production per citizen (which is way better metric than absolute numbers I'd say) isn't as terrible as plenty other countries. https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/co-emissions-per-capita?tab=table&time=earliest..2021

Going "Yea, it's pointless, China is polluting too much anyway" is cinophobic and outright wrong.

Our World in Data
@shine @petergleick it’s not pointless, we NEED to work on ways to get them to go along with us
@petergleick If you mess up your planet in Canada you mess up your planet in real life
@petergleick Yes, I believe that and it’s scary.
@petergleick Texted a friend in the US northeast saying hoped they were faring ok with the smoke from the Canadian wildfires. They said was wild, and asked how I was faring with the Florida flesh-eating bacteria seaweed. Touché
@petergleick Downstream effects of climate change happening all over the world, in every region, on some level or other. But wow is this picture graphic.
