#DisasterPreparedness #List #Wildfires #Reminder (California edition)
1. Restock the N95 mask supply
2. Fix foam/seals on leaky outdoor windows and doors
3. Pre-buy parts for a Corsi Rosenthal box, if you don't have one, or purchase a HEPA filter and new filters
4. Double check your basic disaster preparedness kit
5. Remember to keep your vehicle's gas tank at least halfway full
6. Know how to open your garage in a power outage
@ai6yr Have a bugout bag by the front door with important documents and spare medications (& maybe a change of clothes)
@ai6yr In Louisiana we also buy batteries, snacks and liquor for hurricanes. Should every sit it out emergency include snacks and liquor?
@markfolse LOL batteries, snacks are good... Liquor, LOL. Also, love the name of that server you are on, now I am hungry.

@markfolse @ai6yr The #Boston kit is milk, eggs, and bread. We have a #FrenchToastAlert system.

@frenchtoast

@markfolse @ai6yr It's always emergency time out here, which is why I have solar panels, a pistachio tree and a still.
@markfolse @ai6yr snacks and bottled water for sure
@ai6yr Number 6 is really important! It's a fairly trivial procedure for my garage doors, but I somehow manage to forget it every time I lose power for an extended period. Not a bad idea to remind yourself periodically so you don't lose time when it matters.
@krogers @ai6yr gosh my release thingy is a long, bright red cord. Lol, if the car isn't in the garage you can get smacked in the head with it walking across the garage. I guess that's one way to remember.
@MsMerope @ai6yr I feel I would be able to figure that one out. Mine is hidden of to the side of the track...I think they are technically commercial doors, so that might be part of my problem.
@ai6yr After evacuating 2 fires in California, I started keeping a go bag and emergency kit in the car and at home. I’d add know multiple evacuation routes, check your AC filter and have an indoor air filtration machine. Most people don’t know what you mean by Corsi Rosenthal box. Science in Action: How to Build a Corsi-Rosenthal Box

Learn how to build a Corsi-Rosenthal box. The device was created to provide significant reduction in the amount of virus-laden, aerosol particles that are in the air. Follow along as Dean Richard L. Corsi, co-inventor, shows you the major components of this device, and how to build one.

@ai6yr AMEN! In California it staggers me how poorly prepared people are and could not even go 72 hours in a disaster. We have a full set at the house for extended issues and each car has a 72 hour bag for 4 people in it.

A couple of things I also recommend:
Have an EVAC plan and rally point that all family members know
Designate a relative or trusted person outside of your area as a known contact point. if you get separated that is the place each family member calls to coordinate locations.
JOIN your community CERT team if they have one or start one.
STAY OFF THE ROAD unless evacuating. Your insta post is not worth someone having to put themselves at risk if you get into trouble

The Corsi Rosenthal box was a new one for me. I have everything I need to make that happen. Awesome

@cvvhrn @ai6yr yup... and many CERTs are now enrolling for "Fall" Basic Classes.

Elk Grove / Galt begins August 22nd
https://www.cosumnescsd.gov/FormCenter/Fire-Department-5/CERT-Contact-Us-141

Folsom area CERT starts Aug 31

Metro Fire CERT starts October 12th https://forms.gle/x1qkEJGYoANLFPsS8

Sacramento City CERT begins Aug 22nd. https://sfdcert.org/contact/join-cert/

All dates are subject to change - due to fire season and instructor availability. Just get yourself on the contact list of your home agency!

Not in Sac County? Find your local CERT:

@MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr If, for some reason, you don't have clothes packed up, grab the laundry basket of dirty clothes. You can wash them later, and everything you need is already in it.

#evacplans

@c_merriweather @cvvhrn @ai6yr I keep two large stuff bags in the closet - the plan being to just dump undies, shorts and shirts into the bag. And there's a fire resistant bag in the safe so I can grab stuff and go.

Though I realize that if things get that bad here I will have been deployed and won't be anywhere near home. Whatever I have with me will probably be all I have left.

@MsMerope @c_merriweather @cvvhrn @ai6yr

We keep a bug out kit in the car with some basics.

@MsMerope @cvvhrn @ai6yr I'm on the fence about having another bag in the car. Mine were stolen from the car twice since I don't have a garage.

@beatulo @cvvhrn @ai6yr well that sucks. I have a small kit that fits under a seat.

Fortunately I have a garage.

Then again my car is 21 years old and looks like it. People probably think there could no way be anything of value in it.🤷‍♀️

@ai6yr That Corsi Rosenthal box is awesome. I am going to have the stuff to set up a few of them including one that can be hand cranked in the event of a power outage
@cvvhrn 12V fan version of that probably the best solution there.
@ai6yr Agreed, I like redundancy and manual power as a backup. I will most likely get both. Once we get our PowerWall hopefully it will be an academic question at least for the house.

@ai6yr The garage thing! During the Texas Freeze of 2021, when the power grid went down, my friend had to break thru her immobilized garage door WITH AN AXE because they desperately needed the firewood they’d stored in there.

They keep their wood outside now 🤣

@iBlame Ouch! Most garage doors can be operated manually, but maybe don't tell them that if they haven't figured that out, LOL. ("what? we could have just what?")
@ai6yr Sadly all has been revealed since then. The rest of us rib them about it frequently.
@ai6yr 100% on the corsi. I keep a ready one as it also gets pollen
@ai6yr
Painters tape can also be used to leaky windows.
