With iPadOS 17, Stage Manager is – finally – moving in the right direction.

Apple listened to feedback, reversed course on two major aspects of the original Stage Manager, and shipped something that feels *much* better to use already. I'm willing to give it another chance.

With iPadOS 17, Stage Manager Is (Finally) Moving in the Right Direction

I’m in Cupertino for WWDC this week, and after yesterday’s whirlwind of announcements and surprises, I had some time to sit down with my 12.9” iPad Pro, install iPadOS 17 beta 1 on it, and try the improved version of Stage Manager. As you know, I have a…complicated history with the iPad’s latest multitasking system.

@viticci Despite the shift clicking option it's still a shame that you consciously need to tell iPadOS to open an app in the current workspace. When in the flow, there's nothing worse than touching an app icon and be thrown out of the current stage into a new one. They should give us an option in Settings to choose if an app is added to a new stage or not by default. For me, it won't be fixed until this is addressed.
@viticci @stroughtonsmith I really like the resize handles, which you could also see in the Vision videos.
@viticci Here hoping they do a similar thing with it on the Mac.

@viticci In landscape orientation, how short can the window height be vertically when expanded horizontally at its maximum? That’s all I care about:

- Nebo handwriting app below, all across the screen
- Two or three other windows (Music, Muse, Safari) on top of the Nebo window

@viticci One nice touch they could add is making the grab handles more spatially aware. You can already see in your screenshot that it can tell what is on the left side of the display (lower right grab handle) vs the right (lower left grab handle) but the second row of apps should really be presenting grab handles in the upper right and upper left corners since they’re at the bottom of the display.

Anywho - just glad to see they’re still working on this thing

@viticci My last grip from last year is the window limit. I am fine with the 8 windows limit, but I should be able to use all 8 how I see fit. 8 on the internal screen unless an external screen is attached then 7 max on a screen and 1 reserved for the other seems reasonable.
@viticci On macOS Ventura 13.4 I'm not able to shift-click an app in the Dock or LaunchPad and have it open in the current workspace -- it always opens a new workspace. What am I missing?
@viticci glad they didn’t just leave this alone. Hopefully it keeps getting better over the sumner
@viticci It is so close. I’d just love the option to have it open application to the current stage and not create a new one. Maybe I can get used to holding shift, but my brain isn’t wired that way.
