My hot take on the #Apple #VisionPro : people will mistake a gen1 product for the grander opportunity there is. Happens every time. Happened with the iPhone, with the iPad and with the Watch. Many will look at it and complain about the downsides of a 1.0 product, completely forgetting that there will be a gen2…
@jmovs The even bigger problem - so far - is that many don’t understand that this is so much more than just VR googles. That's why they have a problem to understand the price tag too!
@ShadowBJ21 @jmovs so what is it then?
@exchgr A new kind of computer generation that is a Mac, a 4K display and a 3D TV in one single piece of hardware. People might not see it now … but this is as huge as the iPhone was then.
@ShadowBJ21 @exchgr “A Mac, an HD display, and a 3D TV. A Mac, an HD display, a 3D TV…are you getting it?”
@ShadowBJ21 so uh, macs can already plug into 4k displays, and 3d tvs are not something people are actually interested in. so i’m still left wondering what the gestalt of all this is. maybe there’s no answer yet and that’s fine
@jmovs @asymco At this price few will buy it who can't afford it, but eventually this can be a laptop/desktop replacement. They should add the ability to put in a cradle and use a normal screen too... then it really is an M2 laptop with a 20K 3D screen…
@jmovs Slightly odd to go "Pro" down to masses and not the other way around, but agree otherwise. 👍🏻
@jmovs Seeing lots of "No Wireless. Less Space than a Nomad. Lame." level takes. Anyone who thinks Apple's first revision of a given product fully represents their ambitions hasn't been paying attention.
@jmovs @asymco Yep, I think Apple are in this for the long haul, and this version is no where near their ultimate “vision”, which I’d guess is more Google Glass-like than ski visor, and largely intended for augmented reality rather than virtual.
@jmovs Because of the price tag it’s no where close to a mainstream product and it won’t get there for gen 2z
@jmovs Response in the press seems more positive than the Apple Watch. It seems like there is a general appreciation for the mindblowing tech even if there's some skepticism about it's utility and the hefty price tag. Might not start being mainstream until it gets a bit thinner and more socially acceptable to wear around others.

@jmovs Wait, who dismissed the iPhone? That was an immediate feeding frenzy by the same tech early adopters that are mocking this thing. Why the revisionism?

I mean, the iPad maybe. We all had a good laugh at the dumb name and there was a lot of "it's just a huge iPod" jokes until people had it in their hands.

But there was no analogue for it. We've seen all the stuff this does in other devices, from the TV viewing to the mixed reality. Unlike the iPad, it's maybe better, but not new.

@jmovs $3.5k
That's all you need to know.
There will be so few buyers that I doubt it'll live till gen2.

And I bought into Gen1 VR, with VR still being a small niche, sadly.

@jmovs @dominocollege one thing that’s nice this time around—even the cynical hot takes from the usual suspects are muted. They can’t believe what they just saw. Insane price tag aside, this device is a big deal. I think this is going to be iPhone level revolutionary. Tim Cook has to be so pleased—seriously.
@dopeyeyes @jmovs Correct. And just wait until its reintroduced in Feb/March with a 1000+ plus apps at launch and it goes beyond Apple's apps.
@jmovs Counterpoint: apple watch still sucks 8 generations later. Garmin kicks it's ass.
