🧵🧵🧵🧵
A #Chicago cop got out of 44 tickets by saying over and over that his girlfriend stole his car.

And it worked.

All 44 times, his tickets were dismissed.

At hearings, Jeffrey Kriv often provided what he said were legitimate #police incident reports as evidence of the car thefts. He explained that he got the reports at police HQ.

Kriv did not let on that he, himself, was a cop.

This Cop Got Out of 44 Tickets by Saying Over and Over That His Girlfriend Stole His Car

Chicago police officer Jeffrey Kriv used the same alibi to contest dozens of traffic tickets over the years. A deeper look at his career sheds light on Chicago’s troubled history of police accountability.

2/ While a cop, dozens of complaints about Kriv's conduct were related to fraud & dishonesty. Kriv denied many of the allegations & fought recommended punishments.

(28% of misconduct complaints against him were upheld, compared with 4% against all officers, going back decades)

Unless he broke up with a girlfriend 44 times between 2013 and 2022, he may have been lying under oath.

Let’s look at some examples...

3/ This year, after a decade of getting out of tickets for speeding, blowing through red lights & other violations, Kriv was charged with 4 counts of perjury & 5 counts of forgery, all felonies, for allegedly lying to judges under oath and providing fictitious police reports.

The girlfriend story, prosecutors allege, was fake.

4/ On Jan. 12, the department collected Kriv’s badge and stripped him of police powers.

On Jan. 14, he got another speeding ticket.

On Jan. 17, Kriv retired.

The next day, Kriv’s car was ticketed again for speeding.

For his time on the force, Kriv is receiving a pension of about $6,000 a month.

A spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department would not comment on this story or answer any questions.

5/ A lawyer for Kriv said ā€œmany of the facts you compose are incomplete or not true,ā€ though he did not say what about our reporting was inaccurate.

ā€œHe understands the importance of accountability by all citizens when it comes to paying his outstanding tickets and looks forward to resolving this matter by making good on any oversights he may have,ā€ said Kriv’s attorney.

6/ There’s no indication the Police Department knew how often Kriv was contesting his tickets in court.

There’s also no indication in records that the girlfriend he used as his alibi was real.

@ProPublica
Anybody convicted of a crime that he testified or provided evidence should contest their conviction. He obviously cares nothing about truth or honesty.
@ProPublica please stop clogging everyone’s feeds by posting multiple toots about the same article, followed by more multiple toots summarizing the article. Just cite it in one toot and let people click on the link. I really appreciate what proPublico does, but if this multiple tooting continues, I’m gonna quit following. I suspect others feel the same way
@ProPublica It’s a miracle this jerk hasn’t killed somebody with a car yet… or has he? Have they investigated open hit & run cases to see if he may have been involved in any?

@ProPublica

My only question:

Why hasn't his license been suspended?

@VirginiaMurr @ProPublica in Britain cops are regularly disciplined for speeding/DUI etc - and often kicked out of the constabulary if they get banned as a driving licence is a requirement for basic duty)

They can even lose both their driving privileges to exceed speed limits on duty or get involved in pursuits and their civillian licence if they commit serious traffic offences (either on or off duty, even the use of blue lights and sirens is monitored by telemetry inside the vehicles)

@VirginiaMurr
Because the 44 times, it wasn't him. It was the imaginary girlfriend. Right now he only has the last 2 tickets.
@ProPublica She was Canadian. You wouldn't know her.
@ProPublica Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 44 times, you must be the Chicago Police Department...
@ProPublica IMO, if a LEO lies under oath, every piece of testimony they've ever given in a trial should be thrown out and those defendants given new trials without the testimony of the corrupt officer.
