What are the odds this xrOS/Reality Pro stuff allows non App Store software installation? To me seems hard to justify a lockdown on a $3k "Pro" product.
@paul come to Europe, use our sideloading 😘
@stroughtonsmith I'm going to be very interested in the argument's here. "We have to test every app to prevent eye strain and motion sickness!ā€.
@paul @stroughtonsmith imagine being the person that has to test all of those motion sickness-inducing apps all day
@paul don't forget the question of, "Will it cause vertigo?ā€
@paul something something they can hack your headset and stream porn directly into your eyeballs @stroughtonsmith
@paul I wonder if it will be general company ā€œpolicyā€ moving forward to have at least future iOS levels of ease of non-AS software installation since we’re supposed to get that this year… or if new product lines will be locked down until Apple gets forced to

@via I thought the lock down was supposed to be to prevent over use of the cellular networks. šŸ¤·šŸ» *

* Pay no attention to those iPads/AppleTVs in the corner…

@paul hmm the iPod touch and gps only Apple Watch too… damn it’s almost like we were presented bad faith arguments the entire time šŸ¤”
@via Studio Display? Or does that not count…
@paul *pounding table* studio display sideloading! studio display sideloading! Come on Tim Apple 😩
@via imagine being able to fix the camera with, waves hands, AI!
@paul you mean fix it with even M O R E AI?
@paul I’d guess that if any OS has a locked down mode it will definitely be this one. Apple would be working hard to make sure only the apps they want people to see would be on the fledgling platform. Gotta control the story for something this new.
@paul I’m going close to 100%. It was never about price.

@paul Zero. I’d bet money it’ll be as locked down as the iPhone/iPad.

Hell they might find a way to make it more locked down and require special entitlements like CarPlay.

But more than likely I think it’ll be just like iPhone/iPad.

@paul they will have to soon anyway for all devices due to eu regulations.
@paul will they repeat their iPhone launch pattern of it being entirely locked down, followed by App Store availability, followed by a submissions process? I cannot remember for how long the first iPhone was limited to the factory installed Apps.
@foxus @paul it was a feature of iPhoneOS 2.0 with the release of the 3G, so 1 year. That said, I don’t think they would try and get away with that again. This thing is going to needs apps.
@paul They will advertise it as a feature. ā€œmost secure headset, with apps curated by us to make sure your device is safe from hacks, and has child safe contentā€.

@paul I guess it might be similar "lock" as on macOS?

In theory, macOS on Apple Silicon allows to run iOS apps - devs must "allow" for that, which, in practice, means tons of apps & games are not available. Either due to legal stuff, money (Mac apps/games are more expensive) or devs want us to use either a native Mac or web version of the app.

Sideloading is still possible but with many hacks and SIP disabled AFAIR

I don't think Apple wants to treat xrOS/realityOS as macOS, for many reasons.

@paul It will 100% be locked down. Apple will never willingly give up its App Store monopoly and it will seek to expand it wherever possible. It’s the goose that lays the golden eggs.
@DazeEnd @paul completely agree, apple believes in the all mighty 30%.
@paul *checks notes* 0%

@paul 0%, there’s no reason they’d give up control if they don’t have to

(I wish they would tho)
