Several people here and elsewhere have asked why a school has a morgue. State schools, developmental centers, & institutions are all terms used at various points for residential facilities that housed people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and chronic illnesses. Like asylums, they were built to be largely self-contained mini-cities. Olga Lovick (she/her)@AbandonedAmerica in Canada, we're discussing the residential school legacy, especially in the light of graves that are found at former residential school sites. People were saying, well, if it has a cemetery, then it's really not a school - which is a valid argument if we take a narrow and modern view on what a school should do. @transitionalaspect thanks - I hope you find the podcast interesting and informative (I can't really say "I hope you enjoy it" because, well, the subject is awful). I have done a bit of reading about residential schools and they seem equally appalling. I don't get how people can be so awful.

@SenatorIvy institutions and asylums were meant to function like mini cities so as not to trouble the outside world with their needs (they had farms, barber shops, even fire departments). As a place housing residents with higher medical needs, a dedicated hospital would be necessary. As a place that killed a ton of those residents by neglect, it would need to have a morgue.
