The Abandoned Forest Haven Institution in Laurel, Maryland | Abandoned America

Forest Haven in Laurel, MD was never a great place, even when it was open. Now that it's abandoned, it's become something of an urbex playground despite its dark past.

Several people here and elsewhere have asked why a school has a morgue. State schools, developmental centers, & institutions are all terms used at various points for residential facilities that housed people with intellectual/developmental disabilities and chronic illnesses. Like asylums, they were built to be largely self-contained mini-cities. @AbandonedAmerica in Canada, we're discussing the residential school legacy, especially in the light of graves that are found at former residential school sites. People were saying, well, if it has a cemetery, then it's really not a school - which is a valid argument if we take a narrow and modern view on what a school should do. Need to listen to your podcast
@transitionalaspect thanks - I hope you find the podcast interesting and informative (I can't really say "I hope you enjoy it" because, well, the subject is awful). I have done a bit of reading about residential schools and they seem equally appalling. I don't get how people can be so awful.
@AbandonedAmerica Just listened, and damn. A very distressing story, very sensitively presented. Thank you.
@iBlame Thanks so much for both listening and the kind feedback. I've said it a bunch of times but I was really apprehensive about doing this one right, and it's a huge relief when people I respect like you feel that I did.
