I have to confess, nowadays I think of Coltrane, perhaps unfairly, as a younger person's saxophonist. The fervent anguished seeker. He belongs on the shelf with Hesse's Siddhartha, Kerouac's On the Road or The Dharma Bums, and Salinger's Catcher in the Rye.
The older I get, the more I lean toward the composers: Wayne Shorter, Ornette Coleman, et al.
Elvin Jones, as ever, is a monster on this album.
