@kcarruthers Something similar happens with some diseases. For example lung cancer and smoking, or diabetes and unhealthy food. Shall we ban cigarettes or fast food? No, let's develop drugs to cure those self inflicted maladies.

@CastellanoED @kcarruthers The bans on smoking in so many places has been wildly effective in bringing down the smoking rate, and protecting people who don't smoke. It also bolstered the snottiness some people throw at those who are still addicted (or actually choose to smoke), but this seems a price worth paying.

Any blame for it sits primarily with the tobacco and fossil fuel companies, and the people people they hired (Heartland Institute) for decades of propagandizing.

@slowenough @kcarruthers Just to clarify, in my previous toot I tried to be sarcastic. 😉
@CastellanoED @kcarruthers Missed the virtual /s. Thx for clarifying.

“The best way to lose weight is not to eat less, it’s to poop more efficiently!”

@kcarruthers @laprice Banning things like this is not ideal, and to be avoided if possible (it is coercive, and opens the way for the "but freedom!" response we're seeing). But I support these bans all the way given the uphill climb against decades of extremely bad faith propaganda from the fossil fuel for-profits. https://eqpa.wordpress.com/2022/12/16/my-testimony-to-eugene-city-council-on-banning-methane-in-new-buildings/
