After the budget deal was announced, McCarthy was crowing and went on the attack. Biden and Jeffries? Quiet and reserved. What’s really going on with this? If the deal is good for Democrats, why not shout it from the rafters? My analysis in today’s piece. statuskuo.substack.com/p/spin-cycle?sd=pf
@jaykuo
McCarthy needs his base to think Democrats don't like the deal to get their votes.
@darthstar @jaykuo Exactly! If Biden thinks it's great, he needs those same votes: if he speaks up, it undoes McCarthy's efforts.
@jaykuo @georgetakei It's my understanding that the GOP still needs to whip voters in line and there's stuff the Dems want that could be voted against. Probably keeping quiet until AFTER it goes thru.
@jaykuo I think you are all giving the Democrats far too much credit. There should have been no deal in the first place. Biden has no need to negotiate, he has the 14th amendment. I think this whole thing is a catastrophe of farcical incompetence, and I hope the whole thing gets shot down. If the Democrats can pass a clean debt statute, then fine, but the debt statute is simply unconstitutional.
No Mountain Valley pipeline.
@BrianHigginsClassicalGuitar @jaykuo while it’s not great to negotiate over paying bills we’ve already agreed to, we did have budget negotiations looming and this addresses those issues. Concessions were going to be required as Dems lost control of the house. Seems a good deal

@jaykuo

The Dems shouting would reveal McCarthy’s humiliation, and likely cause the MAGA caucus to remove him—which could be worse for everyone.

@jaykuo I can tell you just by reading headlines. The so-called "'freedom' caucus" is complaining that McAirhead DARED make a deal with the guy who beat their God Emperor in a free and fair election. If the House doesn't pass it, it'll make McAirhead look even worse than he already does.
@jaykuo Dusty’s from here in SD actually. And also a tremendous asshole. But I leave including that up to you.
@jaykuo Bella the cat says that if democrats start shouting about it, GOP AKA Party of Trump will not support it. Those so call moderates will not help. Way until is pass and them shout about how wonderful Biden is!! Bella the cat starting to dislike humans. They are ignorant and stupid!!!
@jaykuo IMHO, this is mostly about saving McCarthy's job (from Biden's more long-term perspective) and preserving the potential to get other things done. Biden probably *could* have crushed McCarthy to dust on this and refused to negotiate, and gone with a bypassing measure, but what happens then? McCarthy out and bomb-throwers in FULL control.
@jaykuo let it become law before crowing is wise
@jaykuo - simple, the deal hasn't passed.
@jaykuo #ALT4you Images of Joe Biden and Kevin McCarthy
@jaykuo There’s a perfectly good reason for silence from the Dems. It’s not yet a done deal. Also, all McCarthy won from the deal was some face saving. Getting to gloat about it is part of the deal.
@jaykuo Um, because it hasn’t passed yet, and we’re dealing with emotional 4-year-olds?
@jaykuo perhaps they're not petulant children who go around acting like aholes over every single little thing, like some political party I know.

Spin Cycle

A very weird thing often happens as soon as negotiators finish striking a bitterly fought deal, as the White House and Republican House leadership did over the long weekend. One side starts to bash on the other right away, and the other side seems to just lie there and take it, saying very little publicly in response. The former looks aggressive and confident, while the latter seems despondent and defeated.
