If you ever wonder how much confidence aerospace companies like SpaceX have in their own technical competence, the answer is: absolutely none, hence getting a special law to exempt them from liability for killing passengers and crew.

Lawsuits I'd like to see: does the state limiting liability constitute a taking under the Fifth Amendment?

@maxkennerly He hires talent. You don't pinpoint land giant spent fuel containers standing upright atop floating barges without talent. But he's an unpredictable idiot with too much money who butts into what they do, as evidenced by a crater, and absolutely no company should do this kind of work without oversight.

NASA learned the hard way. Cowboys, rocket ships, assumptions and mistakes. Back then the cowboys were test pilots, assumptions led to oversights, and oversights killed cowboys.

@maxkennerly While this law is frankly bonkers, it’s more important than most people realize to protect scientists from legal consequences arising from things they have no control over. In particular, I remember a case from several years ago when a bad earthquake leveled an Italian town and caused a high fatality rate among the residents. Accordingly, Italy convicted 5 seismologists of murder.
