For my latest Iconfactory wallpaper, @gedeonm suggested I try something based on NASA's Project Mercury. But I couldn't figure out what sort of approach to take until I came across a photo of the 1962 postal stamp commemorating John Glenn's successful orbit in a Mercury capsule.
